Disagree if you wish, my take is based on leadership performance's. I like Putin 78% approval by his people, better than Obama's less than 20%, how would U.S. citizens feel if our neighbor BAJA Mexico took over our main sea port "San Diego", Crimea was part of Russia for over 200 years, go ahead and support the rest of the Ukraine, and subsidize their government with 45 million that will run their bloated government for two to three month's, just like the French revolution, when the people do not have food to eat the Ukraine's will be burning U.S. flags and Obama mannequins in the capital.
I previously owned rental property in Blaine Lake SASK Canada, the people who live their are first, second and third generation Russians and Ukrainians, they still speak the languages, and their interests in life are very similar, they have the onion domed Coptic Christian churches, I will not say that their is not some tensions between the Russians and Ukrainians, however hundreds of years intermarriage between these groups have diluted that, they like the same food, and can communicate, the languages are similar.

The crime cartels are running prevalent in San Diego, and Phoenix they started out just kidnapping rich Hispanics, they have expanded to kidnapping rich Anglos, Cabbo San Lucas , Guaymas, Mazatlan, Cozumel are places that you may be at risk if tourist can not hide the fact they are wealthy. The so called safe places that cartels are not interested in such as Ensenada are taking the economic heat, except for the cruise ship floating apartment houses with 5,000 + passengers Ensenada has few tourist, and that is really to bad because the people there are honest, religious very friendly, a lot of them do not speak English, and that is a sign that it is not a tourist destination.
In Ensenada you can stay in a 4 star hotel for $168 USD's per week. When you leave the border for the first 50 miles you are in Mexico but it is still the L.A. basin, the L.A. basin has 22 million jammed into a small area 50 miles south add another 3 million, once the leave the 50 mile radius from the U.S. you get away from the graffiti and L.A. influence and get into the real Mexico.
