there are no mechanisms to prevent someone voting more than once......votes are simply written on a blank piece of paper, are voter registration rolls even checked to stop a Democrat voting in a Republican primary? maybe someone can enlighten me as to why this sham election is something that is valid and important?

The Iowa caucuses are hyped every year so Iowa can pretend to matter.

    See also: New Hampshire primary.

quote:The Iowa Caucus operates very differently from the more common primary election used by most other states (see U.S. presidential primary). The caucuses are generally defined as "gatherings of neighbors." Rather than going to polls and casting ballots, Iowans gather at a set location in each of Iowa's 1,682 precincts. Typically, these meetings occur in schools, churches, public libraries and even individuals' houses. The caucuses are held every two years, but the ones that receive national attention are the presidential preference caucuses held every four years. In addition to the voting and the presidential preference choices, caucus-goers begin the process of writing their parties' platforms by introducing resolutions.

The results of the caucus decisions determine the delegates who go to the National Convention and who they are pledged to vote for in the first ballot.

After that first ballot all bets are off and the deal-making begins.

Consider that both Santorum and Huckabee won Iowa previously tells you just how important they are.

    Iowa tests your organizational abilities.

The vote count is inconsequential, but it shows who really has a campaign and who doesn't.

Iowa doesn't have a great record of picking winners, but it does a great job of showing who the losers are going to be.

But wait! Iowa has almost 3% of the electors needed to win the presidency!

The media takes a serious process and turns it into sound bite entertainment media for mass distribution. Ratings and ad revenue are a hell of a lot more important than accuracy, partiality, or the truth.

TV sucks, TV news is NOT journalism.
