LEN LISENBEE
Len Lisenbee's "Outdoors" column runs on Sundays in the Daily Messenger.

The ultra-liberal Democrats who are now in control of both houses in the state legislature as well as the governor's office, have declared war on all gun owners.

They have done so both by the legislation that has been introduced and the people who have been put in charge of the most important committees. So, if you own any gun or want to purchase one, brace yourself.

One attack is aimed at law-abiding gun dealers. Assembly bill A1093 and its companion, Senate bill S1715, would require every gun seller to have a form of insurance that is not even available. If it were to become available, the premiums would probably be unaffordable.

Another proposed law, S1598, would amend the penal law to require the five year expiration and renewal of all pistol licenses.

It appears that everyone with a license also would have to pass a safety course and receive a certificate before they could renew their permit.

What happens if someone fails to renew his permit in a timely fashion? He becomes an instant criminal, all of his guns (not just his handguns) would be subject to immediate seizure and forfeiture to the state. And he would enter into the criminal justice system for a period of time even though he did nothing wrong.

Renewal fees also will have to be paid, though they have not yet been set. There may be more fees for taking the required gun safety course. And these fees will be required every time the license is up for renewal.

What can you do to protest? Call your Assembly and Senate representatives.

And keep calling them. Call other senators and assembly reps, too. Call the governor's office and keep calling. Flood that office with calls. And letters. And e-mails.

And faxes. And more phone calls.

I find it depressing that our state government is allowed to treat our absolute American right to keep and bear arms as if it were a privilege that can be granted (for a fee, of course) or denied to lawabiding citizens.

Please send me comments on this issue.

I need to know how you feel about it.
