Canadians: Tell us your Handgun History

From what I know, handguns are banned in Canada.

Some folks here probably are Canadian or know all about it there.

Did Canada once allow handguns? Were they banned and collected?

Do you have to be licensed to have a rifle/shotgun? How many?

Well here is something I found:

i`m not a canadian, matter of fact iv`e never been there, but yes, they can have them, they have to have their licence endorsed for them. there seems to be two classes for them...restricted...and banned...they also have "grand father" laws. i don`t think it was that many years ago when they were reasonably unrestricted. from memory things tightened up there when they had registration introduced by a woman prime minister, but i can`t remember her name.
