Court rules for gun rights, strikes down Chicago handgun ban

In another dramatic victory for firearm owners, the Supreme Court has ruled unconstitutional Chicago's 28-year-old strict ban on handgun ownership, a potentially far-reaching case over the ability of state and local governments to enforce limits on weapons.

A conservative majority of justices on Monday reiterated its two-year-old conclusion the Constitution gives individuals equal or greater power than states to possess certain firearms for self-protection.

The court however said local jurisdictions still retain the flexibility to preserve some "reasonable" gun control measures currently in place nationwide.

As expeted, these * believe that "Shall not be infringed" means some "reasonable" gun control measures currently in place nationwide.

This ruling is not a victory for gun owners. It means we have to kiss * and get government permission to exercise the 2nd Amendment rights. And then, only if the barrel is not too short, or too long, etc., etc.

Will this also have any affect on NY Citys' ban on handguns too or is this just a Chicago deal. From what I read on yahoo news it said "The Supreme Court ruled Monday that the Constitution's "right to keep and bear arms" applies nationwide as a restraint on the ability of the federal, state and local governments to substantially limit its reach." Oh man I hope NY is next so they can shove their ban right up Mayor Bloombergs rear.

SCOTUS ruled on gun rights, rights of self-protection. They seriously weakened the 2nd, as was expected.

The RTKBA is now officially about hunting, the shooting sports, and self-protection from criminals. It no longer protects you from your government. That is the job of the judiciary, of course, and they ain't big on competition.

This will pacify a large percentage of gun owners and in that regard it is probably worse than a decision to uphold the Chicago law.

Screw them, screw the NRA who supported this 'due process' interpretation, and screw each and every one of you support either this decision or that quisling organization.

I don't think you will ever hear the SCOTUS say the 2nd is about protecting us from the Government--it will most likely never happen. If that's the case then they should just outright ban all guns, and start the collections, and let what happens happen. I wish they would do one or the other. I am glad though that this will be a burr under Daley and Obama's saddle. It took incrimintalism of 20,000+ gun laws to get where we are today--I HATE it that it's incrimintalism that MAY take us back. Call me impatient I guess. I wish they would just follow what the 2nd says--it's crystal clear to me what it says and I'm no lawyer--why is it so cloudy to them[V]

I responded directly to your 'step in the right direction' comment on the other thread, Trinity.

The short version is that SCOTUS has placed the power of licensing, registration and regulation firmly in hands of the States and Cities. They did not have this power Constitutionally until today.

Alito called it 'Ordered Liberty' in his decision. A disturbing juxtaposition of words, don't you think?
