Firearms are not shipped by mail. They are shipped to an FFL holder, and it is none of the post office's business what's in the box, as long as it is marked "Firearm". Antique weapons, you'll find, may have to be shipped to FFL holders as well, if there is any doubt.

Antique firearms are mailable without restriction, according to the US Postal Service Domestic Mail Manual. Rifles and shotguns can be mailed by anyone as long as they are in compliance with BATF regulations. Handguns can only be mailed between dealers, distributers, and manufacturers. It is illegal to mark the outside of a package indicating that the package contains a firearm. Postal regulations do require you to notify them that you are mailing a firearm in that you must demonstrate or certify that the firearm is unloaded. In doing so, you are telling them that you are mailing a firearm.

They haven't gone that far, yet. I guess I am happy and sad, then. Happy it isn't and sad because it will undoubtedly, one day. With the fedcoats violating our privacy at every turn, this wouldn't surprise me....

Just to keep the record straight, firearms, including handguns, can be sent through the mail. The shipper has to fill out PS form 1508 (at least for handguns) that certifies that, and I quote: "The undersigned is a manufacturer of firearms or bona fide dealer therein, and the parcels presented for mailing herewith are customary trade shipments or other articles for repair or replacement of parts. To the best of my knowledge and belief, the addressees are manufacturers of firearms or bona fide dealers therein." I've never mailed a long gun, but use this form for all my handgun shipments as it's cheaper than UPS or Fed X. I've never had a problem and quite often they don't even ask for the form. And it is a violation of postal regs to mark the package so as to reveal that it contains a firearm.
