1. It's time to flood Henrico with calls and e-mails about parks!

I want to start putting pressure on Henrico to allow carry of
handguns in Henrico parks for self-defense.
They have an ordinance that bans carry and the ordinance appears
legitimate. But, they can remove the
ban with the stroke of a pen.

Let's let them hear from us. There is a Board of Supervisors meeting
coming up (info below) and we should
definitely have a lot of people there to show support and/or to speak.

Suggested e-mail:

Dear Henrico Board of Supervisors member,

Please modify Sec. 14-41 of the Henrico County Code to allow
law-abiding citizens to carry a handgun in
county parks for self-defense. Parks by their nature have many
isolated areas and criminals aren't going
to obey any kind of gun ban.

Sincerely,

Henrico Board of Supervisors contact info:

There is one telephone number for the Board members:

804-501-4207

Here are the members names and their e-mails:

Richard Glover - mail@dickglover.com
Frank Thornton - fairfield@co.henrico.va.us
David Kaechele (pronounced "kay shell" I believe) - threechopt@co.henrico.va.us
Patricia O'Bannon - tuckahoe@co.henrico.va.us
James Donati - varina@co.henrico.va.us

I am planning on attending the next board meeting to speak on this.
We need people to show support by being there!

Here is the meeting info:

When/where: Tuesday, September 24 at 7 PM

Board Room, Administration Building, Government Center, 4301 East Parham Road.

You don't have to speak at the meeting, but if you want to download
the form for speakers to submit to the Clerk of the Board before the
meeting starts or before you speak:

I think we stand a good chance of getting the law changed. Let's roll!

2. Let's concentrate on the Governor for the state parks issue!

According to the Department of Conservation and Recreation, the
Governor is going
to be making a decision the carrying in state parks soon. Since it
is in the Governor's
hands, we need to keep the pressure on him and not on Mr. Maroon at this point.

Here is the Governor's contact info:

3. Kilgore's Opinion on gun in state parks is available on line

4 Man defends himself in NOVA park!

FAIRFAX COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT
ACTIVITY
REPORT
SEPTEMBER 6, 2002

ACTIVITIES REPORTED THROUGH SEPTEMBER 4, 2002
PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICE -- 703-246-2253

MASON DISTRICT STATION (DISTRICT 4)

MALICIOUS WOUNDING
*Powell Lane 3800
A Falls Church area man, 58, was walking his dog in Holmes Run Park,
when he was approached by a
48-year-old homeless man who warned him to stay out of the area and
advanced on him wielding a stick.
The 58-year-old man reported that he was attacked with the stick, and
shot the other man in the upper
body in self-defense. The injured man fled, but was tracked by K-9 and
transported to Inova Fairfax
Hospital, where he was treated for his non-life-threatening injury. No
charges have been placed at this
time. This case is currently being reviewed by the Commonwealth's
Attorney's Office.

5. Reminder: Alaska now honors VA permits!

I have called the Alaska Department of Public Safety to verify this.
However, it you
go there, you should double-check yourself.

6. Virginia is mulling over honoring more states

I have learned that VA is looking at honoring more permits. However,
nothing is
finalized and I cannot get a list of the states until it is
finalized. I will let
you know as soon as I hear something.

7. VCDL mentioned in Richmond Times-Dispatch/Daily Press reference
to state parks issue

Parks issue is pretty hot!

8. CAUTION and Reminder: Attorney General's opinion just that for now

CAUTION - DON'T VISIT THE STATE PARKS JUST YET: One of VCDL's more
active members went to Leesylvania State Park to test the waters and
was denied entrance when he mentioned he had his permit and a gun.
That is an indication that DCR might arrest anyone found in the park
with a permit and a gun at this time.

We need to see how this ultimately shakes down. In the meantime,
let's keep the pressure on the Governor.

9. Gun show schedule for next several months

VCDL is constantly in need of volunteers to help recruit fellow activists
at gun shows. This is especially critical in light of our recent expansion
into new areas of the state, and the greater volume of shows we have
undertaken. Below are the shows coming up through the rest of the year.
If you can work at any of them, please mark the dates and let the area
coordinator know when he publishes a call for help, or e-mail me at
Dennis@vcdl.org

Dennis O'Connor
