AARP QUESTIONS PLEASE READ

AARP !!!

Please read.

I realize that many if not most of the group here is under fifty years of age. As for myself I am soon to be 57. Although I have never presented my membership card for discounts, etc. I have been a member since turning 50.

At another gun related site just a few days ago I was informed that AARP supports the Brady Bill. I am embarrased to admit that I was not aware of this previously.

Yesterday, 27 January, I e-mailed and requested if this was so. Now 30-hours later with no responce, I sent a second request. Then followed up with a phone call.

Very politely I requested an answer from the customer service rep.

YES, AARP supports the Brady Bill!

YES, AARP supports the assualt weapons ban!

I then asked what the percentage of membership was that they had polled to make such decisions. I was told "she" did not have access to that information.

I have requested such info be forwarded to me at their earliest convenience and was told it might take as much as five-days for them to get back with me. I reiterated the request and thanked her for her assistance.

I will update you when I hear from them. I did, by e-mail after the conversation, request that my name be removed from their membership roles!

I am thoroughly disgusted that my name has been used as such without my express permission.

Am I the only dummy here that was not aware of this?

I do not think the "membership" would agree with this position.

    outdoortexas,

You're not dumb. There are lots of organizations that don't make their anti-gun leanings publicly known. For the obvious reasons.

    GO to:
NRA-ILA website: www.nraila.org and click on RESEARCH. Then click FACT SHEETS on the left side of the page. Scroll down to the drop down box at the bottom of the page. Search for the "NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS WITH ANTI-GUN POLICIES". Highlight it. Click view. It is a real eye opener.

Hope I've done you some good.
    flatdog.

I decided years ago that AARP was too liberal for me. "What goodies can we get just because we made it past a certain age?" Take a look at the distribution of wealth by age bracket and you can see what a crock that is. (And PS -- I'm not that far from AARP age myself, but I'll never join, I don't care what discounts they offer.)

And PPS -- Guess what age group makes the best unarmed victims (for crooks) due to their relative wealth and relative physical frailty?

Thanks flatdog, I'm determined to spread this info far and wide. Agreed pickenup, that's why I'm so upset about all this!

    Here's their reply!

Thank you for contacting your AARP headquarters on the issue of gun
control. We appreciate hearing from you.

The AARP policymaking process is a long one, beginning in September
and continuing through February annually. AARP's National Legislative
Council thoughtfully develops each policy after reviewing the pros and
cons and makes recommendations to the Board. Public policies are
reconsidered and voted anew each year. Input from members like you,
along with other members' suggestions, are carefully reviewed and
    contribute to establishing AARP priorities.

At this time, our policymaking process results indicate that a large
majority of our members support careful handgun control measures.
Therefore, AARP continues to support measures to control the
availability of handguns. Some of the rationale includes the
following facts: Handguns continue to present a serious threat to
citizens of all ages. Handguns are a leading cause of accidental
injury and death, especially for children. Handguns are frequently
used to commit violent crimes. U.S. Census Bureau figures show year
after year that handguns are responsible for two out of three of
murders. In 1999 (the latest figures available), 28,874 deaths were
due to firearm injuries. At a time when having enough resources to
provide adequate healthcare for older Americans is a special concern,
the medical costs of treating gunshot victims exceeds $1 billion a
    year.

The prevalence of random violence featuring handguns in some
neighborhoods has resulted in numbers of older people becoming virtual
prisoners in their homes. Increasingly, families are suffering the
loss of children and grandchildren who are the victims of violent
    crimes and senseless shootings.

AARP policy does not preclude gun ownership for responsible citizens.
    Our policy states:

"The federal government must continue to control the availability of
handguns and semiautomatic and automatic weapons. Congress should
reinstate the Brady law's five-day waiting period and should leave in
place the assault weapons ban. States should enact legislation that
prohibits the possession of handguns by juveniles, requires adults who
own handguns to keep them away from juveniles, and prohibits the
possession of guns by convicted domestic abusers."

I hope this information has been helpful. While you may disagree with
the Board on this particular policy, we hope that many other issues,
objectives, and services of AARP so beneficial to older Americans
encourage you to remain a valued member of the association. We
    appreciate your participation.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is any way your
headquarters staff may be of assistance in the future. Thank you
again for taking the time to get in touch. It is always a pleasure to
respond to the concerns of a member.

I would like to see the PROOF of that.

What gets me, among other things, is the age group of the members. While I'm about to turn 57, most members were around for WW2 and Korea, you would think these are folks who grew up with and used guns. The leadership has either hidden the truth or scared the older ones they deal with.

thanks for posting their reply. I made the same inquiry and received the same reply several months ago. I posted an e-mail on this and other sites to help get the word out, and I'm glad to see that others are spreading the word. I wrote them cancelling membership and suggesting that they were pandering to the fears of the elderly, and stating that I wouldn't consider renewing until they were at least neutral on Second Amendment issues. I told them, and posted that, "I would not trade freedom for discounts."This would make a great bumper sticker and I hope somebody runs with it. For the record I am 53.

I have terminated my AARP membership due to their position on firearms, and their BS resopnse to my questions as a member concerning this position.
