URGENT ILLINOIS ALERT!!!
-- Daley Gun Control Bills Start to Move
Gun Owners of America E-Mail Alert

Monday, March 17, 2003
The state legislature has begun considering a slew of draconian gun
bills. Two of those bills, a ban on certain semi-automatic firearms
and a pre-confiscation bill, passed out of their initial committees
late last week and now await floor votes.
Among those who are lobbying for this legislation is Chicago Mayor
Richard Daley, who is one of the most extreme gun control fanatics
in the nation.
If Daley gets his way, the rest of Illinois may soon look like
Chicago -- complete with restrictive gun bans and high murder rates.
It is imperative that gun owners band together to push these
horrible demons back from where they came.
There are many bills which should concern gun owners, including a
gun rationing bill (SB 0238), a ban on private sales at gun shows
(SB 1203), and a bill to treat gun owners like sex offenders,
complete with mug shots and fingerprints (SB 1320).
These bills could exit committee at any time. However, there are
two bills that should require the immediate attention of gun owners,
now that both have passed out of the House and Senate Judiciary
Committees:
* SB 1195 -- A ban on common household firearms (that is,
semi-automatic firearms which are not politically correct); and
* HB 2532 -- The "road to gun confiscation" bill (a bill that, in
the name of licensing gun dealers, would give detailed
information on your gun purchases to law-enforcement).
It is imperative that gun owners contact their state legislators and
urge them to OPPOSE THE ENTIRE GUN CONTROL PACKAGE, including the
two which have left the starting gate.
ACTION:
Please forward this alert to your friends and coworkers.
Then contact BOTH your state senator AND representative to OPPOSE
THE ENTIRE GUN CONTROL PACKAGE that is currently in the legislature.
(Please see the two suggested pre-written letters below.)
If you do not know who your state legislators are, go to
http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm and plug in your zip code
under Elected Officials, then click on the State link.
Note: Some Illinois state legislators maintain e-mail addresses;
most do not. If available, e-mail addresses -- as well as FAX
numbers and mailing addresses -- can be found using the above
look-up system.
Pre-written message for senators
Dear Senator:
I don't want the crime blotters for the entire state of Illinois to
look like Chicago's. And so I deeply resent Mayor Richard Daley's
attempts to apply the same kinds of gun restrictions that have
failed in Chicago to the rest of the state.
As you know, there are several bills in the Senate Judiciary
Committee that would restrict the Second Amendment rights of
citizens.
One bill that has already left the committee is SB 1195, a bill
which would ban common household firearms that officials do not
consider politically correct. While the semi-automatic firearms
being targeted in SB 1195 are NOT commonly used in crime, this bill
would ban guns that are useful for self-defense.
Remember the 1992 Los Angeles riots? Many of the guns targeted by
this legislation are of the kind that were used by the Korean
merchants to defend themselves at the height of the riots. Those
firearms proved to be extremely useful -- their stores remained
standing while other stores around them were burned to the ground.
Please oppose SB 1195, as well as ANY OTHER GUN CONTROL BILL that
comes before you. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Pre-written message for representative
Dear Representative:
I don't want the crime blotters for the entire state of Illinois to
look like Chicago's. And so I deeply resent Mayor Richard Daley's
attempts to apply the same kinds of gun restrictions that have
failed in Chicago to the rest of the state.
As you know, there are several bills in the House Judiciary
Committee that would restrict the Second Amendment rights of
citizens.
One bill that has already left the committee is HB 2532, a "gun
dealer" registration bill that will give detailed information on
every gun buyer (and the guns they purchase) to the state police.
This is outrageous!
Historically, registration has been a prelude to confiscation --
even in this country. For example, in the mid-1960's officials in
New York City began registering long guns. They promised they would
never use such lists to take away firearms from honest citizens.
But in 1991, the city banned (and soon began confiscating) many of
those very guns.
Please oppose HB 2532, as well as ANY OTHER GUN CONTROL BILL that
comes before you. Thank you.
Sincerely,
