Doctors vs. Guns

Anyone here been to the doctor lately? Were you quizzed by the doctor about whether or not you have guns in your house? A couple of years back, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) got some doctors to start asking questions about that.

I had my annual checkup today, and during the course of the examination, my doctor brought up guns. Asked me about whether or not I owned any, if I did, were they locked up, etc. I asked him what that had to do with my eye sight, heart rate, blood pressure, which was beginning to elevate as he asked me those questions. I told him that whether or not I owned guns was actually none of his business. That it had nothing to do with my physical well being, and if I did and told him that I did, that it would be covered by doctor/patient privelage and that he couldn't tell anyone anyway.

He backed off a bit with the questioning, then brought it up later. I just stared at him, then very quietly told him to hurry up and get through with the exam.

My oldest son is a cardiologist, and I called and asked him about it. He explained that the CDC does ask for physicians to ask about firearms, and send them any information concerning how many patients own guns, and how they are stored in the home. I was appalled, to say the least. Needless to say, I now have to find a new doctor, 'cause I am NOT going back to that socialist practitioner of medicine!!!! I'm still trying to figure out how gun ownership suddenly became a disease!

Anyone else have an experience like mine?

John

After my wife and I had our 1st kid (little boy) I was at the pediatrican for a check up. She asked if we had weapons in the house.[}:)] I told her that whether I did or not, it was no concern of hers and if it made her feel uncomfortable, to simply get over it.The temp in the room dropped some, but she finished the check up and never brought it up to me or my wife again through all the visits for either of my kids...Makes me think about getting a couple more cases of ammo just thinking about that again[;)]

Funny thing about doctors and CDC asking about guns supposely to help protect kids in the house as well as the adults. If the patient was in law enforcement, the doctor's question would never be asked. And if it WAS accidently asked, and the patient replied he/she was in law enforcement you KNOW the doctor would drop the questioning with no further questions along gun lines. Reason being that the public (doctors included) just assume that all guns in the hands of the "law" are good and safe guns, but all guns in the hands of civilians are to be suspected.

What is so very, very hypocritical about this doctor/CDC asking about guns is that they never ask if you safely store drugs, the very dangerous and powerful drugs THEY prescribe for you, so as to protect the children. Nor do they ask if any caregivers of a newborn helpless baby have a history of violence towards animals or children, or any history of being a child molester, etc., etc. as you get the picture.

John, if you like that doctor or if it would be a hassle to change, why don't you stick with him and make it your mission to effect some change in him. You could make HIM uncomfortable if occassionally you asked him questions about his and the behavior of his relatives/neighbors involving guns, dangerous drugs etc. (Kinda like I outlined above) Because unfortunetly we often encounter a lot of anti-gun propoganda from numerous sources and if every time we find that propogands we have to make a serious change in our life it can get tiring very, very quickly.

    tr..

I've known him for years, went to college with him. He's been our family physician for over 25 years..and then to start this crap. My kids are in their 30's, and he knows it. But the next time I see him, I think I'll ask if he is still drinking like he did in college and see what kind of response that gets! LOL I do have a grandson, all of 18 months old, and when he's here ALL the guns are in the safe...so there's no problems at all, especially that he needs to be worried about.

It's heartening to find out that not too many doctors are following up with what the AMA and CDC are wanting to find out.

Now the follow up. Was at the range last Sunday afternoon, shooting some sporting clays, and who comes up to the first station after my shooting buddy and I finished? The doctor who asked me about guns in my home. My shooting partner had heard the story, so after the introductions, I asked when he had taken up the sport. He said he was raised with guns in the house. I asked why he had asked me, and he said that he was looking for someone to shoot with. I was floored, then replied that if that was the case, why didn't he just ask THAT?

Anyway, all seems to have worked out..and I don't have to hunt for a new doc.

    pickenup

It was ALWAYS going to work out for me. He came really close to losing two patients/clients, however you want to phrase it.
