Bolshevik weenies makin' law!

First let me say I hate these devices for several reasons. Most involve the ineffectiveness and the false sense of security that people will gain by getting one of these over-hyped, gee-wiz gizmos. The NRA has never lobbied on behalf of non-firearm defense items. How's this garbage law somehow a gun-haters victory against the NRA???

Stun-gun curbs become law

By John McCormick
Tribune staff reporter June 4, 2005

Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed into law on Friday legislation that will impose a criminal background check and 24-hour waiting period on people who buy stun guns and Tasers, the same restrictions already in place for gun purchases.

The governor also used the bill signing ceremony at the Illinois State Police forensic headquarters in Chicago to claim victory against the National Rifle Association and pro-gun forces during this year's legislative session.

"You would probably have to concede that the NRA was scoring some runs in the early innings," he said. "But right after the 7th-inning stretch, I think those who support reasonable, commonsense initiatives to protect the public ... scored a few runs in the last couple of innings and eked out a 5-4 victory."

Blagojevich applauded the passage of a law that closes a legal loophole that has let people buy weapons at private gun shows without background checks. He said he plans an intensive lobbying effort toward several suburban legislators whom he hopes to persuade to support an assault weapons ban before the fall veto session.

"They need to show some fortitude and courage and tell the NRA `no,'" he said.

An NRA representative discounted Blagojevich's suggestion that it had a losing legislative session, pointing to bills that were passed that he considers favorable for gun owners.

"When you look at the win-loss column, it is tilted in our direction," said NRA lobbyist Todd Vandermyde. "The governor seems to be out of step with the general public and the legislature as a whole."

Blagojevich said the stun gun legislation, which the NRA did not oppose when state lawmakers overwhelmingly approved it this spring, would "improve the quality of public safety across our state."

Supporters of the new law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, say stun guns are potentially deadly and easy to misuse.

In addition to submitting to a criminal background check and waiting period, stun gun purchasers in the state will also be required to have a state firearm owner's identification card.

Though critics contend stun guns aren't lethal, sponsors of the proposals say they are as dangerous as firearms.

In February, a Chicago man died after police shocked him with a Taser when he tried to bite an officer, though medical examiners have said they aren't certain if the stun gun was a factor in the death.

Illinois is the first state to pass a law requiring a firearm license to own a stun gun, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

I feel so much safer now!!! I know that criminals will never misuse a Taser device because of this new law. How'd we ever get by without this law???

Next the idiots will outlaw pepper spray and batons unless you have a "license". Do these fools really, truly believe that the violent criminals keep a copy of lawbooks at their home and consulte those laws, before going out on a night of crime, in order to see what they can legally do or not do?

Criminals are called "outlaws" because they DON'T MUCH CARE ABOUT LAWS.

Hey Blagojegripe, your "laws" are only obeyed by the ALREADY LAWFUL! The same people who won't cause any trouble WITH OR WITHOUT YOUR STUPID LAWS!

..in addition, , a law for the sole protection of morons in gov't afraid to trust others with a means of defending themselves against criminals, even and especially the ones in the Illinois political circle (all of you pieces of trash (insert gunphreak flipping the bird at them here)).

Those who would offer any interpretation that would relegate Amendment II to "relic" status of a bygone era are blatantly stating that the remainder of the Bill of Rights isn't worth a damn, either.

This could have a small but positive effort for gun owners. There may be people out there in ILL. who have never gotten into the gun hobby because they wanted to avoid the hassle of all the paperwork. Yet many of them may want a stun gun or Taser for defense badly enough that they will now submit to the paper work for gun purchases in order to get the stun gun/taser. And from there maybe they will get into the gun buying hobby. Or just have more support for gun rights since it appears now that milder forms of self-defense tools have been lumped in with guns.

So it would seem that now if gun rights are taken away, stun gun and taser rights will also be taken.

Bottom line, maybe at least a few more soldiers for the pro-gun rights war have been enlisted by Blagojevich.

Gun haters love to exploit the fear of Americans anytime they can making stuff up about what COULD happen. Far too many think criminals will stop in their tracks because a some law that prohibits possession of weapons. Tortured logic is in high gear here...

New research shows that mental illness is common in the U.S., but many people don't get prompt, adequate treatment. More than one in four U.S. adults per year have some form of mental illness or substance abuse. Many of those cases are mild, but 14% of the population has moderate or severe mental illness, say Harvard Medical School's Ronald Kessler, PhD, and colleagues. Lifetime prevalence is even higher. About half of all Americans will meet the criteria for some type of mental disorder sometime in their lifetime, with first onset usually in childhood or adolescence.[:)]

    Good post, Defender.

I agree. Here in MA you need an FID to buy pepper spray. I tell everyone interested, that if you get the FID for pepper spray, you may as well get a Class A (CCW) same price-same background check. Get a gun and I'll take you to the range. Have recruited 3 new gun owners to the fold. One can now be certified (like myself) as a bonafide gun-nut !!!

I believe it is closer to about 48%. Like my pal Michael Savage says, "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder".
