That might be considered a straw purchase, which is illegal. That may require you to "gift" it to him. Here's some info you can read, (DISCLAIMER: what I say dosen't necessarily make it so.)

It is unlawful to sell, give, lend or transfer a pistol or other arm or weapon "other than an ordinary pocketknife" to a minor under the age of 18 without his parent's permission, or to any person of unsound mind.

It is unlawful for any dealer to sell any "pistol, Springfield rifle or other repeating rifle" to a minor.

A minor under 18 years of age may not possess a firearm, other than an unloaded firearm at his home, unless engaged in lawful activities.

    From the ATF website.

quote:(B15) May a parent or guardian purchase firearms or ammunition as a gift for a juvenile (less than 18 years of age)?

Yes. However, possession of handguns by juveniles (less than 18 years of age) is generally unlawful. Juveniles may only receive and possess handguns with the written permission of a parent or guardian for limited purposes, e. g., employment, ranching, farming, target practice or hunting. [18 U. S. C. 922]

You CAN buy it for him, and he can have it, as long as he has "written" permission from you, AND he is using it in a legal "described" manner.
    Does this answer your question?
