Pre-89 .50 BMG?

I was on a gunbroker auction and I saw pre-89 .50 BMG ammunition for sale. Is there some ban on this that makes the post-89 rounds "illegal"? Is there a legally limited supply of .50 BMG ammunition available, or can you continue to make your own lead and brass components?
