Unintended consequences of the AWB.

I will say from my own observation, the ban was detrimental to all of us, the exact same way that the FOPA '86 and Import ban of '89 has been detrimental to us, simply by choking off a source of important weaponry for the populace. Did any good come of it?
So, what happened on our side from 14 SEP 1994 for 10 years? Well, obviously, the newly termed "Assault Weapons" had now been highlighted to the American people. What gun kontrollers wanted to happen was that AR-15's, for example, with their bayonet mounts, pistol grips, flash suppressors and collapsible stocks would no longer be made, period. They weren't. Now, with a few modifications, they were sold once more. Although magazines could now only be bought new with 10 round capacities, grandfathered ones made attractive targets, so that the mag ban part was ineffective for a while. In addition, new accessories had been invented to make these limited resource rifles, due to their mag capacity, more efficient. Things like sophisticated scopes, lasers, red dot scopes, tritium night sights, flashlights, improved stocks and pistol grips, more accurate barrels, new internal parts, to make them more reliable and accurate, foregrips, slings, all sorts of nifty things.
Shotguns became a new focus. Accessories sprung up like weeds very quickly, since, for the most part, these guns were not covered by the AWB. Pistol grips, folding stocks, extended magazines, flashlights, foregrips, a whole bunch of things that would otherwise be illegal on semiautomatic rifles were still fair game on shotguns.
Another type of rifle that has viktim disarming liberals peeing their pants to this day had also been highlighted. The "sniper rifle". Being already inherently accurate (from its inception, it is really nothing more than a high caliber hunting rifle), new ways were made to make them even more accurate. New heavier barrels, awesome new scopes, newer, more sophisticated stocks were invented, and people became interested in learning to shoot them, which is certainly not what gun grabbers want.
Pistols weren't left out, either. A new movement had occured at the state level; the concealed carry movement. This gave birth to the carry gun, which has viktim disarmers changing their underwear several times a day, even now, and probably more than any other category of firearm. The gun size already placed a certain limit on the capacity of the firearm, so, in designing the pistol, the limit was already known at its inception. Full-size 9mm handguns, usually known for their high capacity, were neutered, but were still quite useful in compact/subcompact guns, and full-size guns were already of the impression that, if 10 shots is all they allow, then let's make them big, and make'em hurt. .40 SW and .45ACP had been given a jolt, and new handguns were structured around this restriction. Hand cannons had also gained in popularity, since the standard revolver only holds 6 rounds in it anyway. .454 Casull, .480 Ruger, .50AE, and .500 SW Maximum cartridges had been made popular with handguns, and the Desert Eagle had crossed this line as a semiautomatic magnum handgun, that still stayed within the 10 round limit with ease.
Now that the ban is gone, all of these things are here to stay, as well, and it is a beautiful thing. Too bad some things that are worth having come at such high prices.

The AWB served to futher divide the Gun Rights movement. The "Peace at Any Cost Neville Chamberlan types" versus the "Get the hell out of my face " types...
What the NRA hasn't figured out, yet, is that they helped pass a law that put all the rest in motion, namely, the FOPA '86. This was also done by a Republican president.
