...When I contacted Navy Arms for some info on a recent gun purchase, I asked about a particular style with a serial number and a particular box.
...The guy was able to identify the manufacturer by the box color but this is what the email said: (in part)
"No records from past years
of Navy Arms products as the company has changed
hands and all records from years ago were turned over
the Bureau of ATF."
...Isn't that sweet?

Every gun dealer that turns in his FFL forwards his records to the batf. They compile them to computer...6-8 years ago, a BATF official admitted they had 60 MILLION gun records on computer...and the pace has increased since.
So a bought-out dealer also has to turn in his records...not surprised at all.
