Does the Government....

Does the Government watch for large ammo sales. I am considering buying 20-30k rounds for me and my friends.........
Do you think it will signal a red flare and put me on a watch list ?
I just have a large varmit problem that I would like to take care of.[:D]

I don't know how they could. If you ordered from Sportman's Guide, or something, they'd probably need somebody on the inside, or get some kind of warrant to look into people's recent purchases. If you are in a state like I am, where you can just walk into a gun store and buy ammunition with no paperwork, there'd be no real way to trace you. If you are concerned, go to a FFL holder that you trust, and have him place a large order for you.

Keep in mind however, that I am no expert on the law.

Contact several different sources of places where a person is able to make such large purchases as just plain ask them. Compare the responses you get and see what you believe to be the truth.

Best to do large ammo purchases face to face, and in cash. That is the only way to be sure.

Don't really know,.........but that is a lot of ammo in one transaction, and I can understand your concern. I agree with TRFox,......I would attempt to get some opinions like that first, or just buy 1-2K, at a time from several different sources. Of course that is going to cost a lot more in shipping, I would imagine. Wish I knew the answer.
I personally have never bought more than 1K at a time.
Good Luck,............and if we don't hear from you anymore, we will know the answer for sure![;)]

Around Christmas we bought 7k rounds at one time. We went through that quick. I never heard a peep then but I figure 5 times that amount just might send up a red flare. I guess we will see what happens. See ya all in the news I guess !

You most likely will not have a problem! Hell, if someone shoots a lot, and especially if you are making a lump purchase to save money, and divy it up among friends, it should be no big deal,........problem is, it looks like YOU are the only person buying it for your own use.
This in and of itself shows another aspect of what is wrong,........why does a law abiding guy have to ask questions, and worry about buying some ammo, because of the quantity. It is a "weird" world my friend![:(!]

Don't worry... if you are posting here then you are already on a watch list.

    Gee,......thanks for that comment Wolf![B)]
I personally could care less. If the government doesn't have anything better to do than to monitor a person like me, with all of the problems in this country, from terrorism, to the illegal invasion from Mexico and elsewhere,........then I say have at it, and "enjoy" yourself.[;)]

    Marc;
You are right, of course..but you are looking at the problem from a decent American's prospective....
    NOT the Elites.
The Elites care less that America is becoming a Third World country. Even in the Third World, The Elites have everything they want..

The FAR more serious problem to the Elites is a bunch of pi++++-Off Decent Americans..complete with 10,000 rounds of ammo, and the guns to shoot that ammunition out of...

I have no real knowlege about Ny's question.

I DO, however, have a healthy paranoia about what the government does and does not collect. I believe that buying 10,s of thousands of rounds at one time will trigger a computer somewhere.
Do NOT believe that wholesalers and dealers do not report to the Government. They do...
The Fascists in control of government today have passed laws allowing nearly complete freedom for them to do and collect as they wish...and monitoring guns and ammo dealers would be first on the agenda for people far more fearful of an armed citizen then barbarians swarming the borders.

    UPDATE
    - I just called my ammo guy. He told me that ammo is deregulated and it is no different than buying 30,000 boxes of girlscout cookies. He also said I could pick it up at the loading dock and pay cash, and I will save $30/1000 in shipping. Sounds like a road trip to me.

OH CRAP - what will I say to the Troopers when they illegally search my car and find all that LEGAL AMMO. I'll tell them I thought it was cookies ![:D]

Highball, I share this sediment. I too am a tad paranoid of the governments "monitoring". People would probably be surprised at the files the FBI and other government agencies have on people.

On a side note supporting my theroy:
I once had a PASTOR of a church I attended tell me a story.(He used to be a Marine that worked in demolision not a sniper) After some time being OUT of the military, he wanted to go hunting for squirrels. SO he went to Wal-mart, bought a nice little 22 and took it home. The drones in black suits came a knockin' on his door. They asked him WHY he NEEDED a 22 rifle. He told them why he bought it. They then ADVISED his he really did not need it considering the training he had been through(or so to that effect). He told me he has not bought a gun since. Sure he was ex-military, but if they keep that close an eye on their own, how close do people think they look at us peons?

I am sure far,far too close. Personally if I were to use that much ammo, I would buy a nice automatic reloader from dillion and save money and hassles.Might be more work, but no worry of monitoring and save a buck!

FWIW, ALL credit card transactions are indelibly recorded and cross-referenced by banks and other financial institutions on WORM storage (write once, read many) for purposes of detecting possibly fraudulent activity during and also well after-the-fact.

A very large dollar sale for a very large quantity of one caliber and type ammo sticks out and will definitely raise at least one red flag. That may prompt a phone call from the credit card institution to see if the purchase is, in fact, legit.

While the transaction may be completely legal and even innocent and while nothing may ever come of it, the "world" - for all intents and purposes - now knows you acquired all of this ammo. It may encourage further investigation of one's credit card activities et al or what is referred to as "transaction monitoring and tracking".

And sharing of this type of purchase or use information is routine and should be expected. The credit card agreement clearly states this as well as other administrative reviews and security practices.

Obviously, a cash purchase - assuming it's legal - would be less of a nuisance.
