308 reloaders?

D@DD@D Member Posts: 4,407
Whats some good powder choices for Sierra 220gr HPBT Matchking & Berger 155gr match target VLD? I'm really just playing around these weights (thats why we reload I guess). I'd also like to try out some lighter gr stuff 90-125, but that bullet sample place don't go that low. Any other site ya'll know of that does?

I was thinking about using IMR 3031.

I used IMR 4064 and 3031 with good results. Never went as heavy as the 220 so I can't comment on heavy bullet loads. The 155 Hornady A-max, the 165 Sierra HPBT, the 168 Sierra HPBT Match all worked well.

Another vote for Varget....great powder thats works very well in .308, 30/06/,8mm Mauser. Ive tried a lot, but its one of the very best.

But Ive never tried it with a heavy bullet, most of my loads use bullets in the 150-180 grain range.

I always did well with BLC2 and 3031 in the .308, though for the heavier bullet a slower powder migth be good.

    IMR-3031 under a 220 Gr. in a .308 Win. , isn't going to work very well , Way too fast !

All my manuals only went to 200gr on the 308 loads so I decided to go with a Speer 200gr Spitzer Soft Point and the 3031 powder. I'll have to find some older manuals when/if I go up to 220gr. Thanks for all the help guys.

Not sure why you want to shoot a 220gr out of a .308 win. My opinion anything over 168gr. should be left to the 30-06. Not trying to start the .308-.30-06 war again. Ballistics wise, they are the same +- till you hit the heavy's. Thats when the -06 takes over.

Don't have a 30/06[:p]. I'm really just trying it for the heck of it.

It should have a trajectory similar to a 5 year old throwing a medicine ball !

let us know how the 220s feel on your shoulder. The 155 gr id try RE 15 or 19.

    Geez, all the naysayers.
A 220 gr .308 Win ought to equal or better the .30-40 Krag.
Which may be old, but it still works as well as it ever did.

Hawk's right: The case capacity of the .308 and the .30-40 is almost the same. I haven't tried a 220 in the .308. I guess that will be a future reloading project.

Thanks for all who posted with useful tips. As mentioned earlier I went the 200gr route instead.

I've used 220 gr bullets out of a 30;06 for short range brush ammo before I started wearing glasses and parical plates. Started losing the lenses out of glasses and some of the teeth out of the partical plate and having to add teeth to the plate due to heavy recoil as I got older.
Finally went to 150 gr bullets in the 06 to reduce the recoil to 308 levels.

Also used a 35 Rem cal with 200 gr bullets with good close range results, vel about 2100fps, could shoot at 100 yards and almost see the bullet in flight and then I could hear the bullet strike. If deer was over 100 yards, I think maybe some ran off before the bullet arrived!
    Again low recoil though.

I never tried over 150gr bullet in a 308, 220 gr bullets would be interesting expermient for recoil, velocity, and mainly accuracy. I suspect the recoil would be near the 06 levels with a 220 gr bullet launched out of a 308. (I always let the gun tell me about what it wants for accuracy as first priority when reloading and testing) A real fast or slow bullet erratic acting off target every once in awhile does not impress me any for hunting purposes.

    Let us know your results?????????

I'm using 44 grains of Varget with 178 grain Amax for 1000 yard paper punching. Lighter bullet weight if the wind is gentle. It's a rainbow but like a previous poster said, If I do my part....

Varget is always a good choice for the 308 with most all bullet weights. Ditto Reloader 15.

For the heavy slugs, 760, H414, IMR 4007SSC or the new CFE223 might be a touch better; slower burning.
