reloading issues

liljakeliljake Member Posts: 29 ✭✭
i recently reloaded a batch of 223 and 243 for a friend who has both calibers in remingtons model 700 adl. I loaded both calibers the same as i did for my ruger m77's. for some reason the bolt will not close all the way on either of the remingtons, not even with new brass??? But both reloads work fine in the rugers (actually very well!). Yes the seating depth between the remington and ruger rifles was adjusted accordingly to fit each rifle. The remington bolt is scoring the brass around the rim of the cases on factory new brass pretty significantly and sometimes does not get a firm grab on the case at all. This is an issue of both the 223 and 243. This is obviously some type of bolt issue with the 700 adl's...Any help, suggestions or ideas??? Ive reloaded thousands of rounds in many calibers for the model 700 in the past with no problems, but the 700 adl is another issue.

When I've seen the problem as I understand your description, it has usually been solved by full length resizing the brass again and pushing the shoulder back a bit more. The chamber for your friend's 700 likely isn't exactly the same as your Ruger. If you were using brass fired in rifles other than those of your friend I would look there first. That being said, I had a comparable problem with a 700 Rem (Classic) in 300 Weatherby. Full length resizing didn't help; changing the extractor was the final solution for that one.

The original brass i loaded was once fired hornady and those did not work. I then loaded a batch with new winchester brass which i resized before loading and that was also a fail. Maybe i'll try another full length resize and go from there. Thanks for the input.

I would pay attention to 22hipower's counsel. From your description of the problem it appears that the extractors have to be replaced, or at the very least adjusted. Take them in to a competent gunsmith or contact Remington about the problems.

It seems quite unusual that two different rifles have the same problem. Any chance that somebody who didn't know what they were doing, has attempted to work on them in the past? Maybe he used some of that Russian made steel case ammo that caused problems with the extractors?

I beleive both guns were purchased new in last few years. I think that in the newer ADL's, the quality has really gone downhill. When he purchased th 223 i know it went back to remington in the first few weeks he had it because factory ammo caused the bolt to crack. They replaced it under warranty but that issue raises some questions to say the least. I mean Ive never heard of a bolt cracking from shooting factory ammo before...

Does your friend have any problems with factory ammo? I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that the rifles might have been fired if he has had them for several years.

Try empty resized cases for fit. If NG, adjust the die to bring back the neck until you just get a rubbing on the case heads.
If that works out, load and test just a few.

Have you made sure the chambers are clean, oversize bore brush and a good solvent? Bolt faces free of brass?

Once in a while you get a sizing die on the large end and a chamber on the small end, try a different die or make sure that it touches the shell holder. Along that line some shell holders are different thickness, best luck is the same brand as die.

Any crap under the extracter, use a good hand lens and look closely. A stiff skinny wire makes a good probe. Any burrs?

Thanks for all your input. I ended up full length resizing the brass...again after pulling apart all my previous reloads. I then cleaned up the throat of the gun and seated the bullets a touch deeper than i had previously. The rounds will now finally chamber into the rifle but the the brass is still scoring. My next step will be recommending a replacement of the extractors.

You are getting near you 10 post limit here in ATE so before the mandatory lock I will kick this over to the reloading forum to let our friends over there have a look.

I'd have to try factory ammo in it before I started doing any work on the guns. Seems strange to me that both guns suddenly came down with the same symptoms.
