Rem.700 vs weatherby MK V

I am shopping for a rifle in the 257wea.caliber.
Since a Weatherby vanguard can only be had with a 24in barrel.
I plan to go with a true weatherby or a remington 700 CDL SF with both having 26in barrels.
I would appreciate hearing any opinions regarding the quality of these 2 rifles.
I am not a hunter but would like to do some 500-600yd paper punching.

personaly, I like the bluing/finish of the weatherby better, but for functionality, aftermarket parts, and gunsmith familiarity, I prefer the rem700.

I was shooting a Remington 700 7mm mag and bought a Weatherby Mark V 300WM because I was offered a great deal.

Comparing the two, I like the short bolt throw and the accuracy of the Weatherby was better. Okay for hunting, 1.5" vs .9" between the two is really a null point. It may be the longer barrel, but with the Weatherby I don't feel the recoil as much.

If I could swap my Vanguard for a Remington, I'd pay a considerable amount of boot and still be happy. If I had a Mk5 that shot as mediocre as some I've seen, I'd trade it even up for a Remington.

that's the thing I have run into. The Accumarks are better, but much more money as well. The rem700 seems to just be more consistent for me.

I just had an ultralight fluted 257 wthby barrel installed on a MK V action I had laying around (bought it for a match barrel that was on it) so we will see. I had it pillar bedded in a high end fiberglass stock, so if it "should" do well.

My own MK5 Accumark .280 shoots well. 3/4 MOA. I have had 700's that didn't shoot.... All depends on your ability to gunsmith a 700. If you need to bed or recrown,a 700 will normally shoot as well as my Accumark. Of course, you could have a 700 custom barreled to .257 W., cheaper than buying a MK5.

Maybe you have your mind made up for a reason I cannot imagine, but a .257 Weatherby would not be my first (or twenty-first) choice for midrage target shooting.

Are you a skilled handloader or will you be buying expensive Weatherby factory ammunition?

Agreed, Weatherby cases are 'accurate enough' but not 'extreme accurate'

There are far more accurate rifles and cartridges for mid-range target and hunting. Not as fast, but definitely more accurate. The first thing I would look for if you want .257 cal is a Remington 700 Varmint or Savage 110 BVSS or Tactical. Savage quit making both of those, but they do pop up every now and then. I'm pretty sure Remington still makes a varmint in 25-06 if you want new.

I have a Winchester model 70 that was originally a 7 mag,but now has a McMillian stock,and a Hart match grade barrel with the Browning Boss.26inch stainless,and I have made nice kills @4-6 hundred yds in 257 Weatherby. The action is great,smiths don't care for model 70's because of the extra work in putting them together...Blaser makes one in 257 Weatherby also....But I prefer my Winchester.

I also took a Ruger #1 25-06 stainless composite,and reamed it for a 257 Weatherby cartridge,with a single set trigger,and a Hicks accurizer,its one fine tack driver..cost without glass is about 1800.00
