What is the best thing to clean the ram on my 1974 RCBS Press? Getting a little sticky after almost 40 years. Thanks for any and all suggestions!

LPS makes some good machine cleaning spray http://www.lpslabs.com/product_pg/degreasers_pg/PrecisionClean.html

Then Re-lube with a light coat of Blaster PB http://www.blastercorporation.com/PB_Blaster.html

That's what I have done with mine in the past if they start getting gummy.

Most hardware stores/ Home depot carry Blaster BP Same with, LPS. If the LPS is not available order some! I use that stuff to clean my lathes and mills.

Another good one is plain old simple green and water (for cleaning), This also works well (If you have compressed air to dry everything immediately after rinsing with water.)

remove the ram, clean with break cleaner, oil with kroil or balistol, reinstall.

I clean my ram with barrel/choke cleaner. The can has a good stream to blast the gunk off.


I dry and clean with a rag & then I lube it with a thin rub of 20W or 30W oil.

Remember to oil the pivots on the ram linkage, as well. All kinds of crud drifts in there over the years and adds to the effort needed to operate the press. You will be amazed how easy it is to use once it's cleaned and re-lubed!

if you're going to use brake cleaner, make sure you remove ALL gunpowder flakes/balls/kernels/whatever first. the brake cleaner will melt the gun powder turning it into a hard plastic like substance when it dries. you think it's gummed up now? you'll be in for a shock if that happens. ask me how I know...

I never cleaned my Rock Chucker, in 40 years. Whenever it got sticky in operation, I just oiled the pivot points and the ram with a little regular gun oil. Seemed to go a couple of years between needing to be lubed. I bought another (taller) press about 7 years ago, but the old one is still in service.

The line on oiling the pivot points got me to thinking that had been a while since I oiled mine. Did so over the weekend & I could yell the difference in handle pull.

Any mechaincal device with metal to metal contact needs lubrication.
