I am new at reloading and need a little help. Ammo is very hard to find for my 25-20 and now I can not find bullets in the 86 grain range except cast. I did find Meister Hard Cast but I noticed it said "Cowboy Ammo" next to the bullet. Part number MB 25-20. What is the difference in the hard cast and the cowboy ammo

That caliber was designed for cast bullets. I left a link for bullet man Dan in your entry in the Want Adds forum.

I would just shoot cast bullets sized .001 or .002 larger lubed with 50/50 alox beeswax. 86gr jacketed bullets don't break 1800 fps in a 92 Winchester Lyman 49th loading book. 65 gr cast 257420 with a gas check just breaks 1800 fps. I think your barrel will last longer with cast bullets.

A lot of seldom sold bullets were discontinued during the last ammo shortage. I would write the manufactures and ask if they have any set back Remington SP # 22735 86 gr. Sometimes you boxes of them on gunshow tables.

Or you could make a jig to cut off and flatten the point to 86 grains and even hollow point it. You could use these as starting stock $18/100

The Feb. 2003 issue of American Rifleman has an article on handloading 25-20 Win. An 86 gr. lead flat point with 11.0 gr. H322 gave 1429 fps and was reported as an accurate load (about 1" @ 75 yd.) out of a Win. '92. A good chamfer on case mouth & starting the bullet straight are mandatory for flat base lead bullets. Online, Gunstop Loading Supplies here in MN has 86 gr. Red River Cast Bullets (also MN) in stock - $18/hundred. You didn't mention what gun you have but note that pointed bullets should not be used in guns with tubular magazines.

You may want to check my auction, 553654297. These bullets work fine through my .25-20 Remington pump but I prefer the 60 gr. Hornadys.
