338-06 test Loads

CapnMidnightCapnMidnight Member Posts: 8,038 ✭✭
Loaded some test loads for my new Mauser actioned 338-06, it has a 24" barrel, 1-10" twist.
250 gr. Sierra Boat Tails for test loads, I'll hunt with Nosler, just happened to have a couple of boxes of these laying around. According to the Nosler book, the most accurate load in test gun with same barrel as mine was 51.5grs H-380. I loaded 10 rounds of these, and five each with 53.5 grs and 55 grs. 55.5grs is the max in the book. Waiting for time and weather to do some testing, sighting in.
What say ye?

How full is the case? I like full cases, even lightly compressed for hunting loads. I think new barrels need a box of shells to iron in. JB bore paste and a good copper solvent will help.

    CapnMidnight,

It's good that you're trying a range of loads since we all know that every rifle is an individual.

I'm using the 53.5 grain load of H380 which is right to the base of the bullet in that case. It is extremely accurate in my rifle and not over the pressure limit either.

Other powders to try if you want:

    IMR-4320

    Norma 203B

    Re-17 (favorite)

    Ramshot Big Game (second favorite)

    Best.

    ADDED:

These are all with the Nosler Partition by the way...

    Best.

I'll use the Nosler Patrician or AccuBond to hunt with, figured I'd run these Sierras through it to break the barrel in. Reloader powder is a bit hard to find around here right now, I use Reloader #7 in my Mauser actioned 45-70 with 400gr Barnes SS bullets.
I'll see how it shoots with the H380, and go from there. I'll post a report and let you know how it preforms.
Have you tried any 225gr Noslers, how do they shoot, and what load are you using?

    CapnMidnight,

I have never had a lick of trouble with any of the weights or calibers when using the Nosler Partitions.

The 225 Partition has always performed best with IMR-4895 and VVN-540. I did test the H-380 and H-4895 where the 380 out shot the 4895. I suggest starting at 51.0 or a touch less and work your way up.

    Best.
