.223 bolt gun question

How heavy a projectile could I get away with in a 223 bolt action with a 1/8 twist? I was thinking 70 grains but not sure. I do shoot a lot of 62 grain pills in a 1/9 twist AR.

Bullet construction can/will make a difference - all copper bullets are longer.

Type of action has zero bearing. A longer barrel (24") might get you just enough extra velocity to move up one bullet weight in a 1/8 but it's not enough to make heavier bullets work in a 1/12.

I shoot 77 grain OTMs out of a 8 twist 18 inch SPR with great accuracy.

77g bullets should shoot great. They do in my 1/8 AR.

It depends on the length of the projectile. The bullet makers usually tell you these days what their bullets are intended for. Speer used to have a stubby 70 grain bullet that could be shot out of rifles with a 1-14 twist.
