Can 45 ACP dies be used to reload 45 GAP?? If so any mods that must be done. I remember reading a while ago that the crimp die my have to be shortened but can't find that here anymore.

    Todd,

I'm not sure what the problem is but we have answered each of the questions that you have posed about the .45 GAP and how to reload for it. It appears that you don't read the responses that we write to your questions. You most certainly don't go back and respond to the answers that we post.

But in the spirit of trying to be helpful, here is a recap of the answers to your .45 GAP questions. Please use the links supplied for for more indepth information, that's why we give you the links:

"You can reload GAP with ACP dies. But you cannot use ACP brass to make GAP brass. GAP uses small primers, not large, like ACP. GAP brass is thicker, too."
    http://forums.forthehunt.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=184964 (1/16/2006 - Chunkstyle)
As an addendum to this, you may have to grind off some of the crimp die depending on the design of the die and the press, in order to get the die closer to the shell plate and holder to make a good crimp.

    teeslick,

According to Speer, it is unsafe to cut down 45 ACP cases to use for the 45 GAP cartridges due to the rebated rim, stronger case design and small primer pockets on the GAP brass. GAP cartridge brass operates at a higher pressure than the 45 ACP.

    Brass is available from Starline.

"The internal case wall profile is significantly different from .45 Auto cases to permit seating .45-caliber bullets without bulging. The most obvious difference is that the .45 GAP uses a Small Pistol primer to put distance between the primer and breech/action elements present in 9mm-frame pistols. It is unsafe to cut off .45 Auto cases to make .45 GAP cases. The most significant issue is the difference in primer size. A Large Pistol primer that fits the .45 Auto case will over-ignite safe powder charges developed in proper GAP cases with small primers, and high pressure will result. The .45 GAP case has a much different internal taper, so cutoff .45 Auto cases will bulge when bullets are seated to recommended lengths."

"Being 3-mm shorter than the case of the .45 ACP, that of the .45 GAP is otherwise identical on the outside except for two things: It uses a small pistol primer instead of a large one, and it is a rebated rimless case. The rim of the .45 GAP is 0.470" in diameter (samples measure .467") as compared with 0.475" for the .45 ACP. This was done to prevent shortening the .45 ACP case and reloading it to shoot in a .45 GAP pistol. Glock strongly recommends against shooting any reloaded ammunition in its pistols, especially with lead bullets. In addition, the internal dimensions and composition of the .45 GAP case are slightly different from the .45 ACP."

    Teeslick,
Relax, some of us old farts enjoy sitting on a throne. I do it every morning when I have my morning quiet time with the latest copy of PRECISION SHOOTING MAGAZINE.

In the past I, as you have done here opened up my yapper, making a hasty response to the fine folks here that are trying to help.

I hope you, as I did, learn to not just open your mouth to change feet.

    nononsense -
I would shrug this response off if I were you.
It's probably the wrong time of the month for her to understand that you were being extremely helpful.
