velocity of bullet

ok, could anyone possibley tell me the velocity of this bullet, here is the load. it is .308

40.0 grains of IMR3031
a cci large rifle primer
a Hornady soft point bullet (130 grain)
a 21 in barrle

    Best educated guess would be 2550-2600 fps.

    If you look in your reloading manuals there is a list of velocities for each caliber that the load developed in a test barrel.

    If you subtract about 50-75 FPS for each inch of barrel loss it makes it easy to come up with a WAG on what your gun should be producing. But, without chronographing the load in your gun any guess could be off by a couple of hundred feet per second.

    Another way is to shoot it at 100 yards to ZERO the elevation. Then shoot it at two hundred yards to get the total bullet drop. By comparing the drop to the list in the book you can extrapolate the MV pretty close.
