Which Powder???

RugerNinerRugerNiner Member Posts: 12,636 ✭✭✭
I'm about to do my first reload with a Classic Lee Loader.
I will be shooting these rounds out of Remington 700ADL.
The caliber I am loading is .270 with a 150 grain bullet.
According to the Chart, which I am going to follow, my choices are:
Reloder22 Reloder19 IMR4350 Accur 4350 H450 H4350
Which Powder do you suggest I start out with and why?
Remember, I haven't ever Reloaded anything yet.
Keep your Powder dry and your Musket well oiled.

Of the ones you listed, My pick would be IMR4350 based on years of accurate results with the 270 and 150gr bullets. Sierra lists it as their accuracy powder with 150gr bullets ( FWIW ). H4350 is the least temperature sensitive of that list if you will be hunting/shooting in varied temps and weather. Nosler lists it as the most accurate powder that they tested in their manual with 150gr bullets (FWIW). -- All of those powders load well in the 270, and I believe that buddyb is correct that H450 is out of *. --- My personal pick would be either H4831 or IMR4831, especially with lighter bullets but that's not what you asked.........good luck.........[8D]

    Rugerniner,

Any of the 4350's are pretty close. So you only need to buy one brand of that...for now. You may like another brand more as you go along. The Reloader 19 is right up there with the 4350. Work those two up first see which you and your rifle like then try other stuff. The Reloader 22 is for slightly higher volume cases. Although it may work for your needs.

Since you are going to strictly adhere to the chart I would suggest trying different charts(i.e. reloading manuals). Some of the newer ones are notoriously reducing loads of older rounds and taking the new rounds right up to max. This will also give you different powder choices. It takes a little tuning to get the velocity and accuracy you desire out of a load. It doesn't just happen they way they say it does in the book. You may also notice a variance in where the loads stop at max. One 'universal' receiver may top out at 55 grs. for one powder the other may top out at 58 or 59. You may have the higher manual and your first load is max for your rifle. Or the other way around you may find it anemic and not wanting to go over your manual, you will never be satisfied with the load your rifle can't produce. Take at least two or three sources into question and work up from there. -good luck

I would go with either the IMR4350 or H4350 myself. The RE 19 & RE 22 are probably a little bit much for the 270 case as you can't get enough RE19 into the case to get the pressure up there where it needs to be--same for the RE 22. About 59 to 60 grains of RE19 is all that you will be able to cram into the 30/06--270 cases. For this case size you need to use heavy bullets for this powder to be efficient. You would get better velocity out of RE15 , the 150 grain bullet being a bit light for RE19 & RE22 powder. Alliant themselves don't recommend RE19 for the 30/06 loads using a 150 grain bullet. I haven't seen any H450 in a long time now so it just might be out of production.

With the heavier bullets in 270 as the 150 most definitely is ,Ive had much more success with IMR 4831 than anything else . my second choice if this doesnt group would be IMR 4350.

I'd start with Rl19, then if I ran out of space before I got to Max, then I'd try H4350Extreme

You might also try H4831SC (short cut). According to the Hodgdon website it burns exactly the same as H4831 & it would be much easier to get through a .270 case mouth.

My pick would be RE-22. I load that behind a 140gr Barnes TSX with incredible results. This round has been used to take many deer and a few elk with tremendous results. Also at the range it fires a sub-MOA group from a Browning A-Bolt.

I shoot IMR4350 in my .270 Win. 54 grains pushing a 130 gr Remington cor-lok, great whitetail load and accurate.
