12 ga 1 3/8 ounce question !!help!!

jagjag Member Posts: 484 ✭✭✭
hi, i have reloaded thousands of target loads and am now attempting to reload some game shells. i have a recipe for 1 3/8 oz. the wad is a rem. rp12, which is a 1 1/4 oz wad, but listed for use with 1 3/8 also. i've lowered my ram tube quite a bit but still have overflowing shot at the crimp stations. do i need to keep lowering it? i have already had to remove the "c" ring under the wad finger guide so i can fit the wad. nobody seems to sell a wad for 1 3/8 or 1 1/2 oz. if i can't fit the 1 3/8, how could i ever fit 1 1/2 ounces of shot which this wad is also listed for?
ps- this is for 2 3/4" shells
thanks for any help

Are you sure you're not supposed to be using SP12 wads?

recipe is for either one- different powder weight
i believe the sp is smaller shotcup than the rp

No, the RP12 is for target loads, generally 7/8 - 1 1/8 oz. The SP12 is for field loads, which with lead could go to about 1 5/8oz in 2 3/4" shells.

2 3/4-in. Win. Plastic AA Shells
    1 1/2 shot wt.
    Dram Equiv. Shot Wt.
    (ounces) Velocity
(fps) Primer Powder Wad Grains Approx. psi Print
    3.25 1 1/2 1,150 Win. 209 Blue Dot Rem. RP12 30.5 10,800

think you got'm backwards, this is from alliants web site showing the rp to be loaded @ 1 1/2 oz.

Could be, but my manuals/info show that RP are used for target loads while SP are used for field/magnum loads. Actually I prefer using Winchester wads so only use the Remington by default, such as with loading for a 16 ga.

Checked my alliant book and the load is correct. You'll have to increase your wad pressure a bit to compress it some more. It will be a bit of trial and error till you get the right fit.

thanks for replies, spoke to mec today. they said use another hull. i have my rammer tube down so far already, i can't get the wad in- i've removed "c" ring to get the wad guide/fingers lower. they told me not to do that as i'd bottom out the machine. i'll try alliant tomorrow, everybody is at the shot show...... i did try 2 federal and one remington hull, they worked, but not sure on the fed hull i.d. don't know how to tell if its a gold medal or some other one. thanks again, jag

The reason why the load didn't work is because you were probably using the new Winchester AA-HS hull which has a new, separate basewad. The wads get hung up on the basewad so they can't be pressed down all the way. It's a very common problem. By the way, the gold medal hulls say "Gold Medal" on the bottom of the brass.

Try IMR Longshot powder and a SP12 wad and use Magnum shot. I use it for all of my MeatShoot (aka. Buddy shoots, back-up loads, etc..) and it breaks targets out to unreal distances. I use copper shot 6's with a grex buffer in Win Super Sport hull. Just remember to stay ahead of the target. Longshot takes up less room in the hull as Blue Dot does not and does not have the muzzle blast like Blue Dot.

Longshot is a Hodgdon powder - not IMR. -- But it does load great for "reach out and touch someone/something" distances........

I do stand corercted, too many powders and was not looking at it for data to remember!!! I use Hodgdon Longshot in an 1 3/8oz load of Bismuth for ducks and geese with great results as well as for clay targets, even in extreme cold. Blue Dot will not!!

my favorite turkey load was 1-3/8oz of copper plated num 5 in a fed gold medal hull using 800x powder.you will find the fed gold medal hull a dream too work with on large field loads.it is a straight walled case, instead of tapered inside like the old AA.
