grouping of bullets

I was wondering about the different groupings of bullets and what they mean. For example verticle grouping versus horisontal. I have some theroies, but would like some other thoughts. Thanks Ryan

This is my opinions and experiences, not to say I am right.

I find vertical to be a powder issue or some other variable that allows large MV variations. Also, a part of the rifle touching the bench during firing can do this as well.

I find horizontle to be wind as well as cheek pressure variations or a loose rear bag allowing torque of the rifle in the bags. Another thing that will spread it out is not getting all the parallax out of the scope prior to shooting for group.

erratic can be anything from loose action screws or base/ring screws to bad bedding or need of bedding, a barrel contact point, a bad scope, a bad shooter, a load that it just doesn't like, etc etc etc.

I am sure many other ideas will surface soon as well.

That was my thoughts as well. Im not sure if i had read that somewhere or just my own thinking. Althought this morning I shot a 5/16" group with my .308 at 100 yards. Then shot a different load that terribly horisontal. Any thoughts. I really dont think it was me but then again its never the shooter. lol

by "shot another load" do you mean a different powder charge weight under the same pill (in other words, a handload ladder?) or do you mean a totaly different ammunition?

    wynn24,

I would be inclined to think that by using a different load and rather than it go erratic, it went horizontal, that you would find the second thing JustC said: cheek pressure or parallax. Try another of that load and see if it holds horizontal or goes erratic.

Sorry for confusion. By another load i meant same bullet, case, primer, etc. everything was the same except a different powder and weight. First load RE-7. Second load that went horizontal was varget.

Im not as concerned about this grouping as i am to vertical vs. horisontal grouping!!!!!!!!! thanks Ryan
