We have a couple of Smith & Wesson 1500's that were built by Howa and they are great. The standard barrel on the .223 1500 would outshoot a Ruger bull barrel varmiter we had for awhile, everytime.

The HOWA and the Weatherby Vanguard are the same action. They are made in Japan and are a reliable entry level action. They have the Sako type extractor, plunger ejector and are generaly fair shooters. I have one in .270 win that is one of my favorite hunting rifles. I put a Timney trigger on it, the factory trigger is VERY BAD, and free floated the barrel. You can pick them up used very reasonable. I payed $225 for mine with a crack in the stock i had to fix. There are some aftermarket parts for these but nothing compared to rem 700's or win model 70's.

I bought a weatherby vanguard 22-250 for myself and a 243 for my dad last Christmas time. They both have snow camo stocks with fibers in them, very stiff. Both guns had terrible triggers in them, very creepy and stiff. The "adjustments" didn't help anything. After some timney triggers (simple to install, no creep, weight adjustable)they both shoot fairly well. Some free-floating or glass bedding would probably help more. If you want something that shoots tiny groups start somewhere else, but if you're hunting under 300 yards they should do the trick after a trigger job. I payed $450 for each at a Scheels in Lincoln, NE.

I bought a Howa barreled action which went into a Boyds JRS Classic stock. It is a moa shooter if I do my part. Action is well designed with some very nice features like a flat bottom. It is a well made, very reliable, if not fancy action. If the price is right you won't go wrong.

Howa's are very accurate, being made by the same folks that do Weatherbys in Japan. They're probably one of the best deals around as far as centerfire rifles go. The only other rifles I'd consider close for the money are the new CZs.
