Hi can some one recommend an easy load for a 45-70 gov in a remington rolling block. the rifle is in perfect shape, I am planning to use a 300 gr bullet, and I am shooting for accuracy, would like a light charge in a smokeless powder. thanks in advance joe

Alliant lists 27.9gr of XP5744 as a light load with 31 gr as max load. These are suitable for Trapdoor Springfields in good condition shooting lead bullets. Medium load is 36 gr of 5744 and 300gr JHP Hornady bullet listed as suitable for Sharps and Winchesters. You are on your own if shooting these loads. Check out other powder companies on line. Emery

I have a very nice, very light, very accurate target load. I use a 405 Laser Cast Bullet and only 22.0gr of IMR 4198 which gives 1100fps, about the same as a standard velosity 22 long rifle. Same powder 27.5 gr/same bullet brings you up to 1350fps if you want a little more and still a nice light load for a trap door. the 22 gr load gives me one inch accuracy at 100 yds. this is the best I can give you as I only use 405gr bullets. Sorry

I have had exceptional results with IMR3031 in my Pedersoli 45-70. The IMR website lists loads suitable for Trapdoor rifles using jacketed bullets...these loads will be plenty mild and safe in your Roller. Just remember to reduce the listed loads by 10% to start. While working up to the max, you will likely find a load that groups great. I have found the IMR3031 to be versatile- it works well with both jacketed and cast bullets in a variety of calibers, plus it's clean, which is a welcome bonus.
