Blue Dot and pistol loads

I have been a fan of 2400 for many years in Magnum pistol loads. Lately, with powder prices going even higher I have been experimenting with Blue Dot in both .44 and .357 magnum cases.

I have been very impressed with the clean burning nature of this powder. Accuracy is on par with the 2400. Loads approaching book max show very consistent MV.

If you are looking to shoot more while burning less powder in hot pistol loads Blue Dot may be a good choice for you too.

    Been using Blue Dot for years. Great multi-purpose powder. I load everything from 10ga, 12ga, to 9mm and .32 H&R mag. Excellent results, especially in the pistol calibers[;)].

    Although I use H110 for hunting loads in my .41 magnum because I can get higher velocities with a given bullet weight, I have for years shot Blue Dot in practice rounds. I like it. I have found it to be both accurate and clean burning.

    I shot some 2400 reloads in my .41 last night and did find it a bit "dirty". I was using 14.5gr behind a 210gr lead bullet. Is the Blue Dot that much cleaner?

    The 2400 powder was intended to be used in the 410 shotgun shell originally but was highjacked for the use in modern magnums years ago. It was Elmer Keith's favorite for the 44 magnum and 41 magnum. Most of the older shotgun powders were not clean burners and 2400 falls into this catagory. The grungiest powder I ever reloaded was the Dupont 800 powder. Now that stuff was downright gummy and plated the bore of a 12 gauge shotgun with more of a sticky, gummy mudd than a dry burned residue like most powders. 2400 is a great powder--its just dirty.

    Been using Blue Dot for my 357 for years; max for my loads is 12.1 behind a 158gr jsp. I can get a little more velocity from 11.2gr of HS7, but the unburned powder gunk starts to build up after a few cylinders, not hard to clean off but still a pain to get the face of the cylinder shiny.
    H110 is another favorite of mine for the .30M1; burns very cleanly and doesn't have the cloud of smoke that I used to get from 2400.
