.41 Mag primer choice?

SCorversSCorvers Member Posts: 2,063 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have several manual with loads for the .41. Some list standard large pistol and others use Magnum primers. The charges are about the same in each manual. Is there any benefit/problems with using either?

I use Winchester primers in mine. They say on the box "For standard or magnum pistol loads" I have had better consistancy with them than the CCI magnums I was using.

I use Federal primers (regular large pistol) with most powders like W231, Unique, Bullseye but when it come to H110, 2400, or blue dot I switch to a magnum primer(155) from Federal. The slower burning magnum powders need a little hotter primer for good ignition and complete burn as they are a little harder to ignite than the standard powders. I don't have any test data to prove it but I think it is in the coating that controls the burning rate on the powder that determines whether you need a magnum primer or not. My experience anyway.

Thanks, Pinhead. That is the answer I was looking for. I'm gonna work on a load of H110 behind a 200 JHP. I do use the Mag primers with my 44/H110/240 JHP.

I have also had good success with Winchester Large Pistol Primers in 45 Colt loads.

Sorry guys, I'm a CCI man. Except for using Federals to "cure" a light hammer strike problem.
PJ, I do believe the .41 is pushing a little more pressure than a .45 LC. Gonna use the Magnum primers for the "hot" loads and burn through my vast store of LP primers for the plinking loads.

I'm ready to do some shooting!!!!![:D]
