Good 308 target rifle

Hi everyone. I am looking to get a nice, accurate 308 rifle to do long distance target shooting with. I had a Savage 110 awhile back that I liked quite a bit. I was wondering if there was anything new to the market that was comperable to the Savage 110, or better. Any recomendations would be much appreciated. Thanks

For a rifle like you are talking about, the sky is the limit. Yes something like a Savage will work, and you can shoot longer distance with it. However, if you really want to shoot tiny groups at extended ranges you really should be looking at a custom rifle.

Personally, I do not like Savage rifles. I think there are so many better ones out there. Yes they have a good trigger, but so do others. Tikka for example. The bolt in the Savage I tried was rough and noisy. Not so if you shoot a Browning, Winchester, Ruger, Remington... the list goes on. I will admit, Savage's prices are hard to beat, but you get what you pay for to some extent. Otherwise we would all be shooting Mossberg ATR's or Remington 710's.

Here you go. http://www.cz-usa.com/products_bigbore_rifles.php?m=1 The most accurate rifles I have ever had the pleasure to own. I own three and each of them will shoot one hole groups right out of the box. The price is right also.

    sillybilly5015,

I would concur with steve4102 that CZ's are great rifles. The super accurate model with the Nightforce though runs about 2.4 grand. The 550 varmint in .308 is the next best thing. That runs about standard price of between $550 and $650 depending where you find it.

I personally like the Savages for their accuracy in spite of their bad looks. Although, you need to be looking at the 12 FV(SS) and BVSS styles not the 110's. The 110 is the standard hunting rifle and while they are accurate they don't have the heavy barrel needed to help stabilize shot after shot.

Remington makes a very good long range shooter as well. Howa makes a long range varmint rifle as well. There are a lot of possibilities out there to start out with an "off the shelf rifle" but eventually if you stick with long range shooting you are going to need to go custom. -good luck

    sillybilly5015,

There are quite a number of very good .308 win. rifles that are suitable to shooting long targets, it's a very active niche these days.

In your quest for a long range rifle please don't forget to budget for a better than average scope that is designed for use at longer ranges. Good or better quality base and mounts are required.

I'm afraid if I attempt to list them that I'll leave one of the good ones out. So rather than discuss the rifles, I suggest that you invest the time in reading some excellent reference books about long range shooting.

    http://www.sinclairintl.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=BOVSOB&type=store

A good, in-depth article on the facets of long range shooting:

    http://demigod.org/~zak/firearms/lr_optics.php

This is a link to one of the many articles about long range shooting on Dan Lilja's website:

    http://www.riflebarrels.com/articles/longrange_shooting/shooting_hunting.htm

    Another decent article:

    http://www.tacticaldynamics.us/S&LR articles.htm

This link is for Bob White's website which has an area that is simply named "The List" which containes hundreds of previously owned target and hunting rifles. You can find a slightly used top quality rifle for a reasonable price:

    http://www.benchrest.com/shooterscorner/the_list.html

These folks talk nothing but Longe Range Shooting. Join the forums and read then post your questions.

The last suggestion that I have is to locate a group of shooters that participate in the F-Class style competitions in your area and go watch some matches and talk to the shooters.

    Best.
