243 Loads for NEF?

Anybody else shooting and reloading for a NEF Handi in 243?

I've run a few reloads through an NEF 243 but mostly factory loads. I did notice some of the hotter factory loads would fail to extract/eject occasionally. Polishing the chamber didn't help and when the rifle left here, i sent a 6" piece of brass welding rod small enough to drop in the muzzle to knock the case loose. Owner didn't want to send it back to factory. Have also had this problem with one out of the three .223's I've sighted in.

I sold a good shooting NEF .243 because of the ejection problems. the newer ones have a redesigned "extractor" and they work a whole lot better. As for reloads, yes I shot reloads in it and it seemed to do about the same as any HUNTING rifle does. It was not a "bench rifle" but a good game getter. I too always carried a section of brass cleaning rod to clear the stuck cases. I tried polishing the chamber, small base dies for reloading, polishing brass and still they would stick, about one in ten. I had a .223 barrel for it and it had the same problem.

    Interesting...thanks for the replies.

They have now starting making these with ejectors, instead of extractors, to alleviate any/all problems of sticking brass.

DEG305 - did your rifle prefer a certain weight of bullet?

My NEF .243 shot about the same with all weight bullets from 70gr. to 100gr. I don't remember any of the different loadings that I loaded. I carried it mainly as a backup rifle when on a hunting trip. I built a very nice case for it using a guitar case, had room for both scoped barrels, stock & reciever, and a box of bullets for each cal. I had the same model scope on each barrel which made it easy to switch barrels and not get confused(I'm getting older and get confused easily)! By the way the new ones have manual extractors and the older ones had "auto ejectors" That is they ejected automaticly when they wanted to[:D] BTW the factory only guarentees a three inch grouping at 100yds. If you get one that does better they consider you were lucky! Good luck with yours!!!

    RE: ejectors/extractor
The spring loaded ejector is the problem area. As far as I can tell there is no mechanical feature. It is all spring. It needs a "bump" on the linkage to break the fired case loose in the chamber so the ejector can fling it out. The loder ones with simple extractors were mechanical and worked unless they slipped past the rim.
