i want a 17 for varmit and small game hunting, but dont now what gun to get it in. i either want a marlin 917v or a single shot from new england arms. i would like some opinions of people who own either one of the guns and what kind of scopes they have on them.

I know some people have been waiting for me to answer.

I own the Marlin 917VR in 17HMR, heavy target crowned bbl, blue on black.

I LOVE it! to say the least.

Paid $189 for it from Sportsmans warehouse. The round is deadly accurate to 150yds.

Since I paid so little for the gun, I couldn't justify topping it with a $125 17cal scope. I bought a Barska 3-12x50 Illuminated reticle scope for less than $40.......Yada yada yada, read my range report (w/pics)...

Get one, you'll be glad you did.

I have the Savage and have shot the Marlin and the NEA's + I like the Marlin clip better than Savage but the best trigger was on a NEA...I converted my Savage to take the Marlin clips ...Sooooooooooo If I had it to do over...I would get the Marlin..Mine will shoot quite well at 200+ yards..topped with a 6X18 Tasco Mil-Dot..Fun to shoot! I believe I also paid $189..

I have a SS Marlin with the laminated stock. Great rifle but the trigger was lousy. I replaced it with an adjustable aftermarket trigger assembly from Midway & groups went from very small to tiny. I also have a 14" Contender barrel that is an excellent shooter.
