becnchmark powder

Nosler shows a max load of 28 gr of benchmark for a .223 Iloded up 3 of these loads the case was full almost to the top about an 1\8 of an inch from the case mouth is this normal for a case to get this full?
In my 300 wby the case never gets anywhere near this full

    See www.hodgdon.com for specific information.

28.0 is over the max charge for 40 grain bullets.......

Do NOT fire the rounds, you are over the limit.

Hello I have never loaded benchmark but as a general rule The faster burning a powder is the less it takes in a case to reach max pressure and then you are more or less forced to only load this many grains .On the other hand the slower the burn rate the more you can load before you have too high a pressure . The slower the burn rate in most rifles the higher the velocity if this highest safe pressure will allow it to fit in the case. I for one like to load a type of powder that fill up the case to the bottom of the neck as then you can'd accidently overload a round. Some people use a long drop tube to allow more powder to pack as they are filling the case and others tap on the side of the case to settle the powder and some of the old manuals have a note on some powders in small cases that it will result in a compressed load . your load is almost at that point. As far as you 300 mag I bet if you tried to use some of the super slow powders like used in the 300/378 Weatherby Mag wildcat the case of your 300 would not hold all the powder to get a full boat load. If the load is in a valid reloading manual for your 223 I would not worry.

It is a max load in nosler fifth edititon I loaded 3 at starting load of 26gr and 3 at every 1/2 gr up to 28 so I could check for pressure I did this with w748 and rl7 with the starting loads and every 1/2 gr up to max shown for each powder

Nosler is not the powder manufacturer though.

Benchmark is a higher pressure producing powder from Hornady. I would HIGHLY suggest not to fire the rounds.
