VV 133 powder in .22 K Hornet?

bpostbpost Member Posts: 32,669 ✭✭✭✭
On the ADI powder burn rate chart is shows that VV N133 powder is just a bit slower than IMR4198.

Would N133 be a suitable powder for a 22 K Hornet with 40 grain pills?

In my opinion with lighter bullets even 4198 it too slow for K-Hornet so N133 is also too slow if it is slower. I don't mean that it won't do in a pinch it is just not in the top 4 or 5 powders for light bullets, try LIL GUN. 4198 does better with 50 gr. or heavier bullets still not tops but closer, never seen any Hornet data for N133.

You should really try some Winchester 296 in that little toy gun of yours, I'm sure it will surprise you in just how good it will work with most bullet weights, with the 40 gr BT a plus....

Way too slow for this little case and light bullets.

The data nononsense posted shows how LIL GUN is better. Higher velocity at lower pressures, how do they do that?? Lower pressures should help improve case life for the fragile Hornet cases. 13.5 grains of LIL GUN is a compress load in most if not all cases for 100%+ load density which is good for consistent ignition. I have to get a jug of the stuff.

    Bpost1958,

I would say if you are gong to look at Vihtavuori I would go with the 120 or 110 powders depending on what weight you want to shoot with. I have loaded 120 with 50 grs. in my .222 TC and they worked well.

The Vihtavuori data site http://www.vihtavuori-lapua.com/download.asp give 8-10 grs. for VV110 behind a 40 gr. pill and 7.3 gr-8.7 gr. for a 50 gr. pill.

What I have found with Vihtavuori powders is that while they cost more I usually use less of the same of another powder of the same burn speed to get equal velocities. A word of caution while using their information is that their MAX IS THE MAX. I have hit pressure signs before getting to their max. They have really good powder though. anyways just a thought or two if you wanted to use that powder.
