6mm Neck Sizer Dies

MatchshotMatchshot Member Posts: 452 ✭✭✭
I have not reloaded rifle ammo before and want to start on 6mm Rem. I am buying the standard RCBS 2 die set and see that there is a neck sizer die set available. Is this something more than is in the 2 die set? I use a progressive press.

Working on necked rifle ammo looks to be a little more challenging than .45acp...

    Matchshot,

There are a few variations to die sets which can include additional individual dies. Besides the standard 2-die sets made up of a full length sizing die and the seating die, you can also get a 3-die set which includes the necking die. This die sizes the neck only and doesn't work any other part of the case. The full length die works by reducing the entire case slightly for ease of chambering. In general, if you're only loading hunting cartridges, we don't bother to neck size only. The neck sizing is usually reserved for shooters who want more accuracy by leaving the case at the chamber size and reducing just the neck to grip the bullet.

If you want another explanation, possibly with illustrations, check the front of your reloading manuals. If you don't have any manuals you need to have at least two.
