22-250 loads

What 22 caliber pills are best in a 1-12 twist? I have a feeling 45-55grainers will perform best. Also will barrel wear/throat erosion on a new button rifled barrel be much more severe in a 22-250 than say a similar rifle in 223?

What are your favorite 22-250 loads?

definitely. I shoot both but mostly the 223. 50 gr hornady sx with 25.5 gr 2015 gets me 3333fps and I have shot over 12000 rounds through a rem 788 that still gets 1 ragged hole 5 shot groups at 100 yards. I shoot lots of prairie dogs and a 22-250 will not hold up to this volume of shooting. If you dont let the barrel cool 22-250 barrels have been ruined in a few days. I use my 250 mainly for coyotes and a few prairie dogs on occasion. C Walsh

hard to beat the 52gr SMK or 52gr speer or 52gr hornady a-max or 50-55gr NBT. The key is not overheating the barrel so metal is eroded at an increased rate.

yes, any chambering using more powder than another, but pushing it through the same bore diameter, will erode steel faster than the one using less powder. However,..this is NOT something of great concern. The old wivestales of buring out barrels very quickly are based on heresay, and the older powders which were much more abrasive, coupled with lesser quality steels from the past. Todays powder coatings and higher grade steels will last for very long periods of time before erosion destroys accuracy. I have seen match barrels with 3-4" of the rifling completely eroded away to a smooth bore, that would still hold 1/2" groups.

if you can't hold the back of your hand on the barrel for say 10seconds,..then the barrel is too hot,..stop shooting. Other than that,...shoot away.

38.5gr H380 under a 52gr SMK in a pards 700vls was the load I arrived at for accuracy.

JustC has about the same recipe that I have.
34.5 of H380 Rem "Mag" primer with a 55gr SPSX or Nosler BT.

Here's a pic of my 22-250. Built for me about 35 yrs ago. It has a 10x Unertl scope, Sako bull barrel, 98 action and an oversized stock. Weighs in at a bit over 15 lbs and can knock the eye out of a knat at 500 yds. It really loves 45-50 grainers and shoots less than MOA consistently. Probably has 1800-2000 rds thru it - conservative estimate.

    Yup.

And do watch barrel heat. I've just about shot out mine already. It's about time to take it in and have the chamber re-reamed. That should cost me less than a new barrel.

If it helps, my 22-250 seemed to like 4895 pretty well too. So don't over look the potential with it.
