M1A loads for 168g Sierra BTHP

BHAVINBHAVIN Member Posts: 3,490 ✭✭
I have been reloading for years and I have load books but what I am looking for is loads for the M1A shooting the Sierra #2200 168g BTHP match bullets. I have a Springfield M1A National Match and as I have not loaded for it yet I thought I would ask if anyone has pet loads or a duplicate load that the rifle teams use for competition. Thank you.

    I use 40.5 gr of 4895 IMR in a Black Hill match brass case with a CCI LR BR-2 primer.

    Right around 42grs of either H.Varget or IMR4064 has shot well in a couple of M1As for me with the 168 Sierra bullet. I lean towards the Varget load, but varying the powder charge up or down a couple of tenths of a grain for each rifle until you find the sweet spot both shoot very well and are consistant.
    Good luck.................[^].

    BHAVIN,

    There are threads listing lots of accuracy loads for the M1A on GB. They are fairly standard simply because of the M1A operating system. Your rifle will tell you when it's happy with which load.

    My suggestion is that unless you're concentrating on short range (0 to 300 yds), I would switch to the Sierra 175 gr. MK #2275 for your accuracy testing. It's a much better bullet for accuracy.

    The military loads are:

    Start = 38.0 gr. IMR-4895

    Max. = 40.0 gr. IMR-4895

    I happen to like IMR-3031 for a slightly improved burn rate and cleanliness. Just start a little lower than the IMR-4895 and work up.

    You should also look at AA-2460, AA-2520, and V V N-135.

    Best.

    Remington Brass, cleaned preped, neck size only.

    Federal match primers.

    41.4gr IMR4064

    168gr HPBT Sierra,

    Seat bullet to just touch the lands and then back off a hair...

    Works for my rifle.

    Yours may not hit the side of the barn...
