40-65

Last night I acquired a modern Marlin lever that has been rebarreled to 40-65 and was used in the cowboy-action long range shooting. Anyone had experience loading for this round? I am told that simply necking down 45-70 will give me the brass & the load that was suggested was about 32 gr of 4198 behind a soft lead bullet (350 gr????). Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If it's chamberd to the 40/65 Winchester then yes 45-70 brass will work. New brass with the right headstamp is available from Starline though which is probably a better route. Google for load data...it's everywhere for that round.

Accurate Loading Guide no. 2 lists this round with 5744 powder for lever action rifles.

260 gr. lead fn- starting- 23.4 grs., 1452 fps. Maximum- 26 grs., 1651 fps.- 20,000 psi.
300 gr. lead fn- starting- 21.6 grs., 1333 fps. Maximum- 24 grs., 1515 fps.- 19,200 psi.

I would think that modern rifles could use a little hotter loads than these. ?? Don't quote me on this though.
