I am assuming your talking 38 here, if so, you can reload the hollow base wadcutters backwards. I have never done this, but supposedly it works well. If your talking about a auto, like 45 acp, then I would say just buy hollow points, or live with shooting the wadcutters, as cutting a gap in each round would be extremly time consuming.

SAFETY WARNING!!! Although reversing hollowbase wad cutters has been proposed (and done) for years, DON"T try it! It's an excellent way to end up with a cracked barrel at the forcing cone, not to mention other possible problems, including a blown cylinder from pressure excursions. There was a good article on this problem several years back in Handloader Magazine. They might have it archived on their web site.
Bullet expansion is somewhat dependent on bullet hardness. Don't expect hard cast bullets to expand no matter how they are deformed or hollow pointed. Factory lead bullets and swaged bullets such as hornady or speer lead bullets are fairly soft and will expand if hollow pointed. Forester has a tool which works with their case trimmer to let you do this.
While I'm at it. DON'T try to make soft poits out of FMJ ammo by cutting or filing off the bullet nose. There is a real danger that the core will blow thru the jacket, leaving the jacket stuck in the bore. If another round is fired you have a nice bore obstruction and have a good chance or ruining the barrel and even blowing up the gun.
Bottom line...It's cheaper in the long run to buy what you really want...ammo and loading components are cheaper than guns.
