Winchester Ball Powders

bpostbpost Member Posts: 32,669 ✭✭✭✭
I have never had any luck getting winchester ball powders to shoot well in my rifles.

Does anybody have good experiences with these powders using Sierra 168gr match kings in a 30-06?

Myself, for military rounds (IE 30-06, 308 etc) I have stuck with the Hogdon, IMR types. This is not to say that Winchester ball powders don't work, I have just played with the stuff that does.

Ball C 2 (BLC-2) is a fave of mine but not popular with some.

Use mostly stick powders - very little ball stuff. Guess if I used a powder measure more that this would change. Only use a measure when reloading handgun loads. Still use the digital scale for each round of rifle ammo.

Supposedly, ball is a little harder to ignite and mag primers are used. Someone that reloads ball powders will have to address this issue - I'm going by heresay.

I've been useing the faster burning ball powders almost exclusively in recent years without ignition or other problems, It's just a matter of working up a proper load.

My understanding is that some of the MILITARY, bulk/pulldown, ball powders that are sold have a deterrent coating that requires magnum primers for proper ignition.

I have used some Win powder, it is OK, but my #1 choice is BLC2 in .222, 223. and .308.

    IMR stick for 30-06.

I have used W748 in a .308 lever action Savage in the past but have switched to stick IMR powders and RL powder for 2 main reasons. 1. The W748 tends to burn pretty dirty, especially if you use regualr primers. 2. W748 being a coated powder is a little harder to ignite with anything but magnum primers. It does meter extremely consistant through powder measures though. If you are having accuracy probelms with ball powder try a magnum primer, it often makes the difference as it will give more consistant ignition.
