I finally found it!!!

After a year of trial and error with my NEF handi in .223 I've finally hit on a load it likes! Winchester brass, neck sized in a lee collet die, cci 400 primer, 21.0 gr IMR4198, 52 gr Berger match bullet, seated at 2.265" OAL. Approx. 3100 fps. Cover a 5 shot group with a dime at 100yds. Up to this point I had put approx. 500 rds of various loadings thru it and nothing was satisfactory, from 1in to all over the backstop! I was beginning to think that all the hype of the accuracy of the Handi-rifle was just every body not willing to admit that it was nothing more than a so-so truck gun. Now I can start to refine the loading, and staart working on the .243 barrel I have for it![:)]

    I have always found IMR 4198 to be one of the best powders in 222 or 223One of my best loads in 223 is 21.8 gr. with the Hornady 50 gr. sp Glad you hit the right combination.It can be tough to find the right load sometimes.I have actually given up on a few guns.

    Congratulations, You have much more patience than most of us. If I can't find a load that works after about 200 rds the rifle gets traded.

    How is the trigger on your handi rifle??

    The trigger pull is very heavy and I'm thinking of a trip to the LOCAL GUN SHOP to see if he can do anything to improve it. I have already cleared the forend of touching any point of the barrel except, of course the screw area. I also reshaped the buttstock to a smooth fit at the reciever and fluted the comb after I slimmed it down so that it fits my hand better.

    i have heard from several people that thier handi rifle puts their bench rest guns to shame...I may have to get one.

    yeah I've got a 223 heavy barreled handi rifle as well, I've shot less than .5 MOA quite consistently with black hills, so theyre definitely capable.
