Weatherby Predator .308 125 grn ballistic tip currently pushing 3000 fps at muzzle. Very fast and apparently accurate. Still need ot work on the bullet seating depth in my opinion however.

Sako AV Mannlicher with 20" barrel in 375 H&H. Working up loads for the 270 grain Barnes TSX. Hoping to get 2650 FPS from that short barrel. It's going to Africa in May 2006.

Deputy Don....depends on what you are hunting? For deer
sized game it is hard to beat the 145 grain Grand Slam. It
knocks them dead right now! But yes, 150 grainers should work
well too. Remingtons have a good rep. Don't use boattails,
    they come apart on impact.

The 160 grain bullet has about the same numbers as a 180
grain bullet in 30-06,(sectional density and bullet coefficient) and should work on just about everything.

I let the gun writers talk me into "premium" bullets a while
back, and found they are not necessary.(small holes all the way through!) Remington and Hornady bullets work just fine. Might use a premium on elk, though.

My custom # 3 Ruger. Douglas 25.2" barrel chambered in .38-56 WCF. Just starting out with a load from Ken Waters Pet Loads. I know that I can exceed that load as his are primarily for the old Lever action rifles, but we will see. I am currently using 37 grs. of IMR 4895 behind a 255 gr. lead bullet and fired by Federal 210 primers in reformed Remington .45-70 brass. Don't have a crony so don't know about velocity with this load. Oh Yeah the barrel is a 1 in 12 twist rate.

Thanks. I love the Leupold Mark 4. Would rather have a Nightforce of course but didn't have the 1300.00 for glass.

I am also helping my buddy with his Barrett 50 BMG project and my other buddy's Sako TRG42 in 300Win.

After this 308 is done I am thinking a 300 RUM is in order.

A vintage Stevens single shot in 25/20 WCF. I have a stash of Speer 75 gr. soft point, flat nose bullets. I haven't started yet, and I'd like to hear some suggestions. I have a can of Alliant 2400 that should work well, but any ideas using others? In four manuals, there just isn't much data to be found. Any ideas?

    Hey FrancF,

How do those 155gn bullets work out at longer ranges, 600 yards plus? I am at 45gn of Varget behind a 175gn SMK, sub MOA 5 shot groups easily. Running around 2730fps. Will be testing it out at 300 yards tomorrow to see how they do a lil further down range.

    At the moment it's a 27" #5 Lilja barrelled 25/284 with a .287 neck on a tuned XP-100 action.
    Then it's going to be a 28" #7 Shilen barrelled 8 twist 6mm BR with a .252 neck on a tuned Ram-Pro action.
Spent the last few weeks turning down necks, and tuning brass for the both of them.
I have it all fire formed shooting out of the bedroom window, can't wait till April to finish em up.

Guys, you got some fancy rifles. All I've got is a newer Winchester in 270 short-fat with a laminated stock and a Leopold 3x9. Shoots sub MOA and I haven't even glassed the stock yet, current load 140gr
SPBT over 62gr. RL 22 and WLR primer.

Don't know yet, I am still dinking around at 100. It's hard for me too get to a range that long. My local gun club only has 100. When I can, I go out to BLM land a ring em out. For me thats about 2 hours away.

But what I will say is out of my Rem 40x it likes the A-Max better than the Sierra's. I am a newbie with this bullet but so far its won me over![:D]

CF,..here is the one of the candidates for new load developement this spring/summer,...also why I am keeping track of your varget and RL15 performance compared to accuracy loads from other 308 shooters,..I think I need more barrel though.

    JustC,

Very nice rig. Is that a 24" barrel? Most guys are running 26" but a few of the guys are having good results with the Rem 700 LTR with 20" barrels out to 800yards with 175SMKs.

it is currently a 21" Hart 1:11.25 originaly installed by Seely Masker himself but we set the chamber back a 1/2turn to freshen the throat. It still has it's BR .336" neck so thinning the necks is a must. I had a blast with it all summer on the crop damage permits,..300yd deer didn't stand a chance,.it got boring after a while.

She is a fast barrel,..I am getting 2710fps with win supreme factory match ammo with 168gr smk's out of that little 21" tube. It used to be a "hunter class" benchrest rifle,..but that type shooting doesn't interest me as much as LR,..so I fixed her up as a hunting/tact rig. Traded the mcmillan BR stock for that mcmillan A2 even up, needless to say, i got the better deal.

McMillan stocks are so sweet. All you need now is to get rid of that pretty shiny barrel and you have a nice tac rig. With a barrel like that you will have no problems pushing the 175s to 2700fps and getting out to 1K.

Whats typical barrel life on a factory tube?
  • JustCJustC Member Posts: 16,056 ✭✭✭
    edited November -1
depends on how it's treated mostly. A 308 with the faster powders can be shot from what I have heard up to 5000-8000rnds before she goes over 1/2MOA (M24 rifle). As long as a carefull cleaning regimen is observed and clean burning powders are used, you could never have to swap out a factory tube. The 5r rifling makes for more speed and less wear due to the radiused rifling, and the new companies like broughton and Border are having great BR success with that type, but no factory offerings are available with that yet. I would say that your CM factory tube will go to a good 3000rnds before she starts to be only "hunting" accurate. My 300RUM Light Gun I expect only 1000-1200 rnds of competitive life. I'll swap that barrel over to another action and cut it back past the erosion and rechamber in the same caliber for a LR hunting rifle once it goes,..the next competition chambering I may use could be a 300WSM or from what I read in Precision Shooting, it may just be a 300SAUM due to it's slightly less capacity being rated as a hair more efficient by the author of the article. The 300RUM has set some records,..but I think there may just be a bit too much powder capacity and a bit too much barrel heat.

I'm working up a couple of loads for my Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in .260 Rem--it's not looking like it's gonna be a challenge so far though. I got a 3/4" group at 100yds the first time out! This was the "varmint" load, still working on the deer hunting load...and have reached my velocity goal with H4350 and 120 Nosler Ballistic tips...now if it just shoots like it should[:D]
