The last time I read P.O. Ackleys books it was very evident that the 30/06 has spawned something ( successful or not ) in every caliber from .224 to .375, I can't think of another cartridge to even come close. The .308 was prolific but not quite in the same league as the old '06.[;)]

I'd say the '06. Even the .308 started as an '06, before they shortened it.

    I'd guess .30-06 followed by the 7x57. The .300 H&H has spawned quite a few,too.

7x57 spawned the 308, 30-06, 250 savage, and all the other .473 rim sized cases.

Which in turn was spawned by the prolific 8mm Mauser (the guy was a genius).
However, I would have to go with the 30-06 if you were using each case as a starting point. Then the Mauser case.
Not that the 8mm was necked to make the 7mm and the 30-06 was 1/4" longer .30 cal derivative of it. And, the .308 was a 1/2" shorter version of the 30-06 and the .243 is the 6mm version of that...etc, etc. -My $.02 worth.

I'll vote with bittersweet on the 284 Winchester
    22/284, 6mm/284, 25/284, 6.5/284, 30/284, 338/284, 375/284...........
Same thing probably with the 30/06 but it's not short and fat and cute.....

I love the ol 30/06 but I would bet on the .300 H&H. Every modern case with a belt started out on the .300 H&H and was either necked up, down, blown out, shortened, etc. to arrive in its present form and that includes all the Weatherby calibers. It even spawned the "magnum" word usage in the reloaders vocabulary. I could be wrong but you'll need to prove it to me to get me to change my mind.
