New trick

dcso3009dcso3009 Member Posts: 2,350 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here is a new trick I found to keep the spent primers from falling out of a Rock Chucker press.
Cut a 1.5 to 2" piece of a drinking straw and flare one end a bit. Put it flare up in the shell holder. This will funnel the spent primers down to the catch pan. This is a real cheap fix to a pesky little problem with this otherwise great press. Just remember to take it back out before you try to use your priming arm (if you do).
Hope someone else can find this usefull.

    Hmmmmm. Nice idea.

I'm tired of picking up removed primers from the floor when using my Dillon 650, maybe this trick can be used there too. I'll see what can be done.

Mentioned in another RCBS thread was the RCBS tech support solution of building a fence around the spent primer cup using some thin cardboard and a few paper clips.

I must have a press that is different in some way guys. Mine deposits the spent primers right into the tray every time. Do you guys use the peice that goes across the back of the primer tray that attaches to both sides at the rear and holds it firmly in place up against the base of the press? I have not even had one pop out forcefully enough to bounce out of the tray. I wonder if mine has something wrong,..or right with it? I am interested in this and determining if there is a design flaw. If yours doesn;t have the piece that goes from side to side, then take a rubber band, and wrap it across the rear from side to side so that it is held up tight to the base. if you have already tried this,..then nevermind my suggestion. Maybe someone with the faulty tray can post a pic so I can see if/how mine differs from yours, we can come up with a home fix it.

Straws make great tools. I use one slipped over the nozzle of my "wipe out" bore foam. I slip it up into the chamber until it hits the throat, and then press the foam out. that way it doesn't backfil into my chamber and get down into the bedding material. Straws kick *!!

Nice hint, don't let my wife see it, she is the broom driver in my loading room (cement floor) [:D]

For those that use a MEC press for shotgun shells, drill a 1" hole through your bench. Place a "approperate receptical" (I used a empty 12lb powder can) to carch the falling primers.

My primers don't fall out of the catch pan, they fall out of the slot cut in the ram for the priming arm. This only happens with small primers. Large primers have never done this.

Here is a pic. I hope it comes in clear. I'm having trouble with my digital camera and getting the flash to fire on macro. This was as much light as I could get since it is dark out now, and not on macro. I may try again tomorrow... If I get a better one I will change it.

dc,....so they skip past the tray and deposit on the floor? Mine will come back up with the ram on the next case and fall into the tray. I say we consult RCBS on this and get some free upgrades?[;)] My ram seems to let them all go right into the pan. Do you hear that little "phhuuuuuutt" when they pop free? You don't have a bunch of grease in that ram slot do you? If so, that may hold them until they fall free onto the floor. Like I say, Mine might be a factory defect that the slot is not as long???

Mine is the same way JustC, falls into the pan probably 99.9% of the time. Once in a while I will get one that flops out.

Hmm, mine is a new Rock Chucker Supreme, different design from the guys having problems?

JustC These are never making it to the pan. My ram has 2 slots cut in it. one in the back for the primers to fall out, and one in the front for the priming arm. About 1 in 25 falls out the front slot of the ram. They usually hit my leg and don't go far from the bench. It is just a pain to sweep all the time. Yes I hear the same thing. I always thought that was from the air trapped above the brass in the die.
I will try to get a picture of the ram tonight.

DC, just checked both my RCBS presses and neither one has a slot in the back of the ram. We may be onto something here. You may wish to inquire about that extra slot. If that was a ram milled out twice by accident, then there is your problem. Get them to swap it out. My primers are deposited down the priming arm cut and fall into the front of the ram and into the tray. I would place a call on the 2 slot ram. If they are persistant, tell tham that none of your other 6 RCBS presses have this and they all work fine. I bet your press is replaced free. many times, the primer drops to the bottom of the milled slot, and they are not ejected into the tray until I raise the ram to size the next case.

JustC, I think this is how RCBS is building these now. My press is not even a year old yet. The slot in the front is much higher on the ram than the one on the back. The spent primer catch pan is designed to catch them from the rear out of the lower slot. they then go into a small funnel that goes to the catch pan. The catch pan is all plastic. It looks like this... http://www.rcbs.com/default.asp?menu=1&s1=4&s2=2 You can see the catch pan behind the ram. I know what you are saying about how yours is built, my dad has the same thing. That may be a much better system.

Oh and last night I had a LR primer jump out of that front slot. Now I am using the straw trick on my rifle shell holders too.

I guess newer is not always better...

yeah,..after looking at the pics,..that is definitely not like mine. My trays are on the front of the press.
