What powder for a 7mm WSM?

LesWVaLesWVa Member Posts: 10,490 ✭✭
What would be a good powder and primer to use for reloading the 7mm WSM? I do not wish to have a barrel buster. Just something near to factory Federal Fusion or Vital Shock ammo as far as Velocity and energy goes.

Will be using new Unprimed Winchester brass and topping it with Sierra SPBT 140 grain bullets.

MagPro works very well in my 300 WSM. IIRC, it was developed for the short mags.

H-4831 is a good contender, as is H-4350 with that bullet weight......
    RL-19---RL-22 works well...
Try a regular primer like the Federal 210-CCI 200- or the Mag primers like the CCI250-Federal 215....
Find a powder, and primer that likes your rifle, and bullet the best, and go from there....

    LesWVa,

I have been using IMR4831, H1000, and VV N165 in my rifle.

I use nothing but federal 215M's for primers.

    EDIT:

Just as a side note to this I almost never get published velocities with factory ammo. If all you want is Federal factory velocities that won't be hard to attain. The past few years I have typically gotten about 200 fps less than what they have on the box. Consistent...but slow.

tested using a Win Featherweight 7mm WSM zeroed at 200 yds.

    Went with Mag Pro.
    New Winchester brass.
Federal 210 primers since we had them on hand.

Load ten rounds each with 67, 69 and 71 gr. of powder.

69 gr gave the best results.
    2987 FPS
At 100 yds the grouping was close to 1/2".
At 200 yds it was still close to 1/2".
At 400 the rounds dropped 7 3/4" low and were within a 2" group.

    67 gr went so so.
    2875 FPS
    1/4" groups at 100 yds
    1 1/2 at 200
400 yds right at 9 inches low with a group in the 3 1/2 range.

71 gr went ok. But not what I am looking for just yet.
    3250 FPS
    1/4" at 100 yds
    1/4 at 200 yds.
400 yds 6 3/4" low but the group was spread out to just under 4 inches.

Headed to the Local sporting goods store later this week to pick up some better primers and thought about a different powder. But have decided to work with the Mag Pro at least until this pound is gone. Also going to up the bullet grain and try some 150, 160 and 175 to see how it does while trying to get the FPS down to around 3100.

Thanks men for the advice I will try to keep you updated on this one.

Looks like you are well on your way. I would say go with the 150s, 70 grains of MagPro with Federal 215 primers. It should get you close to where you want to be.
