6.5 Midrange Precision Round

SP45SP45 Member Posts: 1,761 ✭✭✭
I am building a match rifle for midrange distances. 500 to 600 yards. I will be using a Remington 700 action. I am only interested in the 6.5's for a lot of reasons, barrel life, Bullet SD and efficiency. (I have others in 30 cal.) What velocities can I expect from the 250 Savage case and the 257 Roberts case both being necked up to 6.5. I will be using the heavier match bullets.

    I haven't a clue as to what a 6.5x.250 Savage will do.
A 6.5x.257 is pretty much a 6.5x57 and ought to do similar to a 6.5x55 with a 142 gr SMK at 2800 fps in a strong modern action.

Sounds like a lot of trouble to me. How about a 6.5x55 or a 6.5x47 Lapua? An old standard and a new wannabe standard.

For that matter, why not just a .260 Remington? The ballistics are similar to the 6.5X55. I would think that it would definately out-perform any 6.5 that is based on the Roberts or Savage wildcats.

A good friend of mine has both the 6x47, and 6.5x47 lapua for f class competitions. The load he has for the 6.5 with 140's is just shy of 2900. No pressure signs and good case life. Both are capable of shooting groups at 600 yards that will only cause scepticism unless you witness the groups being fired. I plan to have a 6.5 built myself next year as a dual purpose rifle, competition and hunting. The 6.5 is also impressive at the 1k mark.

Go with the 6.5x55 (factory cases are plentiful).

On a modern action, 2800 fps would be a start with 140/142's. 3000 fps will put you just right.

Many midrange benchrest shooters are going with the 6.5X47 and the 6.5X284, read about them both:

    6.5X47:

    6.5X284:

Of course it is had to beat the 30BR:

But the 6mmBR still holds most records for midrange:
