Necked down 308

I have read a lot of cartidges have been derived from the 308 case. Has there ever been one necked down to a 22? Just wondering HTR

I shoot the .22-243 Ackley Improved.

    There have been several:

    .22 Durham Jet

    .22 CHeetah Mk1

    .22 CHeetah Mk11

    .22-243 Win.

    .22-243 Ackley Improved

There is also the Middlested version of the .243 Win. case:

A question for ya nononsense! I am not really very familiar with some of the caliber conversion, I mean I know quite a few but don't own any. So what is the benefit of a 22-243 over a lets say 22-250, or is it just personal preference? I myself have been thinking of some caliber conversions just because. Mainly the 7mm-307Win. Ackley Improved. I have been pounding trying to find out some info on the 7mm-307Win. and the 7mm Shooting Times Eastern. By theory they should be almost identical but I have not found anything to confirm or denounce this theory. I am wanting to convert a lever action to a 7mm, but really want something different than a 7-30 Waters, pretty much just to have something different.

Like they say "there's nothing new under the sun". About every original case has been necked up, down, blown out, cut back, or stretched if possible. Certainly the 308 case has had every adaptation imaginable over the last 50 something years. There are probably 20 different 22's on that case alone.

    HTR,

Everything about this rifle is old.

It's an old Remington M700 action that I was using as a test bed for various experiments with cartridges and barrels. I made the 22-243 AI just for fun to use in a long range prairie dog shoot a couple of years ago.

The barrel is an old 1:10" twist Douglas that I had laying around and it turns out to be a veritable one load rifle. It didn't like the lighter bullets so I loaded up a few with 75 grain AMAX bullets and it wanted to shoot very small groups. So rather than play around too much, that's the load I shoot. It's wicked on prairie dogs and targets out to 600 yards.

The stock is an old-style Sako Varmint stock by McMillan that I tore the bedding out of and rebedded with pillars for the Remington and the now heavier contour barrel. The only thing on this rifle that approaches newer is the trigger and that's only because I has a Kepplinger on the bench and decided to put it in.

    Best.

    jtmarine0831,

I guess you can call it personal preference or you could chalk it up to wanting to try something different from what I've shot before. The barrel was originally chambered for 22-250 and I had shot it a lot on varmints. The 22-243 AI was a simple rechamber and the barrel was long enough to use the increase in powder capacity of the new case. Other than that, I like the 22-250 as a standard cartridge.

Your post about the 7mm STE is interesting except that I think you will find that this is maybe not worth all the effort and expense. Don't get me wrong, I'm the biggest supporter of having a different cartridge for any reason. But when it comes to what you're wanting to do, I think you'll find that the gain will be nil. Just one guy's opinion.

    Hotelthreeromeo:
RCBS has long kept a "library" of wildcat cartridges. Once a conversion is made somebody has to do the reloading dies!

RCBS has done this for years, long before most of the other die makers existed. Suggest you make a call. I thought I read that they actually had a printed list? It might make interesting reading for anyone considering "inventing" a new cartridge before he spends his money.

I believe Mobuck is correct! I actually have a 375 H&H case necked down to 22 caliber and loaded! Found it in a yard sale with a bunch of reloading junk being sold by the family members.

This should also answer jtmarine0831's question: some times it's "not the need but the want" that inspires a wildcat.

which is as good a reason as any for my 375 case.[8D]

Your rifle sounds almost like why I'm interested in messin with the 7mm STE. I have a 94 AE in the cabinet that is so shot-out and mistreated it's not funny. I picked it up at the sale barn here a few years ago and was really disappointed in it. I know a 30-30 isn't the most accurate cartridge but Jesus it wouldn't hit a five gallon bucket at 100yds. I examined the bore the best I could, then took it in to work and borescoped it and I don't see how a bullet didn't get stuck side ways, but heck for $100 it's worth rebarreling. As far as a use for the rifle when I go to the 7mm STE, I don't have one, can't hunt with rifle in Indiana. It is more of just a project, I want to get into smithing a little and figured you gotta start some where. It'll give me some time to hide in the backroom away from the wife and "TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD, BHAA HAAA HAAA HAHAHA!!" I know I'll probably tie up a decent chunk of change in it but I think the experience will be worth it. And Thanks for the Opinion! [:D]

scrubberguy, I found this list earlier today on my mad hunt for the Wildcat! Hehehe Here is the link!

Oh, I'm not trying to invent a new cartridge. I just want something a little different. I'm not smart enough to invent a new wildcat. Yet! Bhaaa Haaa Haaa Hahaha![}:)]

    jtmarine:
Glad you found the link to RCBS, niceer is the fact that you passed it along!

Read you have a worn out 94ae! what an easy project gun. Had the same deal with a Marlin 336. You didn't mention barrel length but I bet it's a carbine.

I decided to go full rifle barrel, 24", in 7-30 waters. What a difference over 30-30 in a 18" barrel. I was doing business with Matthews and sons for years before they closed and they were happy to set the head space a little tighter than the average lever gun.

Even with blunt tip bullets it would surprise the bolt gun guys in the family! When I want to varmint hunt I single loaded balistic tips.

Gun got traded away to a nephew in exchange for a 94 in 32 winchester made about 1910. It's in the safe wanting a new barrel which is on order. Gonna go old school on this one.

Think about the waters conversion Since the AE can be scoped you might be in for a surprise.[8D]
